Showing someone how to open a terminal and do something simple is kind of like opening a book of magic in front of them, and it frequently goes Disney's Sorcerer's Apprentice all over the place, and they either become a sysadmin or die comedically.

I have a friend who dove into linux because she hated windows 10 so much when it came out, and knew computer nerds and googled installing ubuntu, and I told her that was awesome and let me know if you run into problems.Anyway, she ended up calling me to ask "What the fuck is elf magic?" Uh... oh, wait, ELF?

Anyway, she was worried because this didn't make sense, weird secure boot issue, we ended up disabling it.Wait... she was already running a custom LAMP application in a VM, some academic research app from another nerd in her department for archeological artifact cataloging? And running updates from git, this wasn't a formally published thing? Whats going on in here?I had to really emphasize how far she had wandered into this shit, and that if you're having problems here you're a sysadmin.

Still not sure I understand the "elf magic" problem, does secure boot integrate with anything related to kernel modules?I'm kinda fuzzy on the low-level stuff. But she was using virtualbox, and it looked like it built/installed some custom kernel modules or shims, but I think it still had to be a mainline kernel from canonical? No clue how a dist-upgrade freaked out a laptop at that level, and I'm a professional!
