@cwebber I understand why people post these things. And I understand why some people might choose to leave the US. It can seem overwhelming. But I also think about my parents and my grand parents. This country has always contained "unwanted" people, demonized people. Like an irritating grain of sand. And to some real extent most of the things worth celebrating about the idea of America are the direct result of such people.

@cwebber I sometimes day dream about what it would be like if all of us disappeared. Gone, in and instant to some other plane of existence. Every inconvenient woman, every gay person, every disabled person, every "illegal," every over-serious academic and expert, just all of us gone. Who would be left and what would that do? Would they even survive the week?

@futurebird Many things that were celebrated about Germany pre-WW II were from Jewish people, like Einstein. But of course Einstein left, or he'd have been killed. "Celebrating the idea of Germany" was a good way to get yourself and your family killed.@cwebber

@futurebird @cwebber There was a movie called A Day Without A Mexican that touched on this idea.

@futurebird @cwebber I doubt they would, which is why I think we all *should* leave for about a week, maybe a few just in case, and then come back 😂 not that I can afford to do that either

@wtrmt @cwebber Gonna legit rewrite "Left Behind" but it's about rich people finding out how to pick strawberries.:: Something was wrong. A change in the in the quality of the sound. The light through the penthouse window spoke of dawn, but things were missing: a distant roar of airplanes, the subsonic rumble of the subway, human voices on the street below. Normally, workers would call to each other bringing up the mail. But that morning Park Avenue was silent.

Also it's not like there are magic destinations that are safe or sure to stay safe. A lot of what Trump is pushing is being pushed all over the place.@futurebird @cwebber

@futurebird @cwebber I left, but if I hadn't I'd be dead. I needed spinal surgery, and it was never going to happen in the US. Now... I can use my hands. I'm mostly ok. Most people can't leave though, especially the ones who really need to.

@futurebird @cwebber before livejournal was sold to the russian mafia (like the usa government ...), I stumbled across a livejournal account that had started a fiction series that was an alternate left-behind series that was somewhat like that; the rapture took people of color, scientists, lgbtq folk, feminists, and so forth. It got very grim, very fast, mainly because the food industries all collapsed quite quickly. Then the author decided they couldn't continue.

@futurebird @cwebber There’s an alternate version of this in which all the people hoping to be raptured are, in fact, raptured — or they vanish, anyhow — and the Earth becomes like a paradise again.

@futurebird I agree; progress is due to the people who often struggled, demonstrated, were not afraid to speak out, or were afraid but spoke out nonetheless. It's so important to remember them and their struggle, their fight to make things better. For all of us! And we should not give up on what they achieved.Someone I knew (African) said he was sad so many left the country for a better life, while the country really needed them to get better. He stayed, as a teacher.@cwebber

@cwebber i'm too oldi don't mind if my kids leave the USi'll be the movie cliche of the peripheral character who stays behind as a sacrifice play to slow down or divert the zombie horde so the main characters can run ahead and escape

@benroyceThat's kinda how I feel. Also I'm not leaving dogs behind and you usually can't take them. Canada maybe but I have no connect there. Speaking only for myself but of course I'm in a relationship with boyf 33 years and a compound of others and complicated. @cwebber
