... And if you think you do know. If you think is obvious or simple I am skeptical of your certainty. From party leadership, to pundits, to the people in the bodega the pattern is the same: The first reason for Democrats losing a person will mention is the thing they personally feel democrats are bad at. There are, however two broad categories of criticism:* Media Messaging technique vs. *Fundamentals1/

People who think that "messaging" is the greater problem focus on the segment of voters who voted for Trump but who now say they regret it.People who believe the issue is the content of the "Democratic platform" focus on the voters who did not show up. This group is also larger than in past elections. As someone who wants a Democratic party that is meaningfully distinct from Republicans I wonder which group is more receptive to left-leaning messages?

Non-voters are a younger, and so I think they are more likely to be progressive. Further, at least some of the "regret" voters are like MTG. They are disappointed in Trump because he's not conservative *enough*, or because he's failed to be a conservative populist. This is why I think listening to non-voters is critical. Really listen and try to learn WHY rather then twist their arm about how rational is is to vote strategically or whatever.

I have been trying to do this and one theme I didn't pay as much attention to, that I now care about is simply corruption. "They're all corrupt!"You know it. I know it. Cue the Leonard Cohen song "everybody knows" and rock out with me will you? But, this worldly cynicism is disappointing to young people in a more destructive way than it is to older more jaded people. What do I mean by "corruption?" Let's break that down.

The secrecy, leniency and obvious coverups of things like the Epstein case. This issue is HUGE and both parties try to use it but I think very few people think either really care about the root issues at all. Rich people can do whatever they want. They even have their own prisons when they manage to get into one. (Rare)Kickbacks, stock trading, and the obscene wealth of members of congress. "Why should I vote for HER to go get rich in DC?"

@futurebird From the other side of the Atlantic the problem seems to be an education one There is NO reason whatsoever for not voting, none.As citizens of democracies we have rights, but we also have responsibilities, and voting is the most important one. This was ingrained in my way if thinking during my study years, to cast our vote.Even if you feel like voting the lesser of two evils Oh and also, there were fascists on the ballot, wtf man.

@futurebird I think the Zoomers are a special condition of Trump regret. I don’t know why they swung so heavily for Trump, but I don’t think they believe Trump hasn’t gone far enough.

In equal measure there is also the sense that issues like the environment, public health, foreign policy etc. are more about making one person or another rich (Musk car subsidies, Pelosi and her stocks...) so even if a politician is talking about something good it's just tool for something else. By the way this is part of the source of the cynicism about "woke politics" think corporate woke eg. Pride month.

@futurebird 50 years of economic myth building, that govt should be small and not do much for most people, so a very few people can get very rich. 30 years of the Democratic Party buying into it and embracing it, until almost completely hollowed out.I think it's that simple. It will take a long time to reeducate populations.

Some of, maybe even most of the "anti-woke" crowd are just reactionary. And I don't really think winning them over is worth it because... um what would be the point? I want to live in a diverse country that accepts everyone. And that matters even more to me than the corruption. But for many people those things are inverted because they don't see the risk to their safety and rights from right wing politics as clearly, or they just aren't as much at risk.

@futurebird The "progress" made under Democratic governments is mostly illusory when you dive into the actual numbers. Even the "maintenance" argument - that Democrats are better able to maintain the systems created by their betters in previous eras - fails to hold up under scrutiny.Democrats barely win elections because most of their voters are just giving up when they vote. Few of them actually think Democrats will do anything worthwhile.

@futurebird500 char doesn't leave room for nuance. Americans are inured to their own fascism because it dresses in their own beliefs. This affects Dems. Many of their missteps can be traced back to this. Much of the rest seems garden variety incompetence. I wrote an analysis of HRC's losses, both vs Obama and DJT, and it came down to hubris and incompetence. Listening to HRC's former campaign strategist poisoned Harris' run.

@futurebird All voters in the last election voted for genocide, except the few that voted for parties that were guaranteed by our system not to win.People should not support any of this. The US Constitution should end. The US as a state should end. Our capitalist system should end. Our descendants are not going to care why we supported genocide.

@futurebird There seem to be larger global trends. Trump-like politicians and "anti-woke" have been winning in many countries. So I don't think it has much to with what American Democrats do or don't do. I think it's a little influenced by Russian propaganda. I think it's more a result of social media, and the ability of lies to spread in general. And I think it's mostly a backlash to modernity - society and demographics changing too fast for some.
