Alright nerds, I got you a quest of sorts.Situation: Some gen z and zellinial folk I know are keen on forgoing Spotify for mp3/mp4 players/alternative ways to listen to music for many reasons.Quest: What are some options they can consider? Ripping CDs? Good music player options? Software for them to organize their media/playlists? Similar ways to discover new music? Alt services?Scope: Options that are friendly to not-tech-savvy folk are very welcome. [Hard mode, ik, lol].Other info:--

Bit torrent isn't terribly complicated, every college kid figured it out before Spotify was a thing, but if that's not in the cards I used to have iirc a winamp plugin to play internet radio stations. Something along the lines of: https://fmstream.org/index.php not necessarily an endorsement, just the first likely thing kagi fetched for me.

- For the older folks to know: Hardware wise, Bluetooth headphones are king with this age cohort. Also CD drives are not super common nowadays lol- Free and FOSS options are nice but I'm also open to other options to pass along.

@tombofnull is piracy an option? or legal methods only? CD drives may not be common, but they can be easily sought and acquired inexpensively. and many public libraries still have huge CD collections. for media library organization, #MusicBrainzPicard is a great option and is cross-platform. for discovery, nothing so tech un-savvy as the radio. commercial radio sucks IMHO, but indie radio (broadcast and streaming) exists: chirpradio.org, wfpk.org, somafm.com. plus there's SiriusXM.

@tombofnull bandcamp is probably the easiest way to just buy mp3s. amazon sells mp3s too. and there's always stuff like https://github.com/spotDL/spotify-downloader.player: unironically one of these refurbished ipods they sell on ebay.

@tombofnull@voidwood.online Second hand stores still sell a lot of CDs too, for very cheap. Oftentimes they'll also have some cheap USB-connected CD drives. For ripping, free software such as whipper exists. Players are abundant, and really depend on what kind of setup one wants. You can't go wrong with mpd, you can add a GUI interface for it too. If you want even simpler, there's stuff like Clementine. Organizing can be done with Picard, or any of the dozens of other utilities.I wouldn't consider stuff my dad did two decades ago very "tech savvy", so this solution should work for even the most tech illiterates. If not, perhaps its high time they start teaching themselves some skills. Also, while you posted downthread that the solution doesn't have to be free and open software, I would strongly disagree there. If you don't switch to free software, you're just escaping the chains of one tyrannical overlord only to be chained by the next one you meet. Stop this cycle of digital slavery, and choose freedom instead.
