There are some clickbaity news about EU supposedly forcing locked bootloaders, usually sharing or copypasting this article - https://xiaomitime.com/eu-kills-android-bootloader-unlock-starting-august-1-59449/ (tracking warning - there are trackers)Below is a comment I wanted to post directly to the said post, but unsure if it will pass premoderation, so I'll post it here too:While EU is definitely not perfect and some it's bills contradict their focus on human rights of privacy and right to repair, this article is uninformed clickbait at best. I implore you to, please, do a bit of your own research, read the actual directive (directive 2014/53/EU and regulation 2022/30) before jumping into conclusions and sharing this article. From my best attempts at understanding this, it only has to do with mechanism of verifying software for the wireless chips, which can be (and mostly already are) implemented without locking the bootloader. And even then, it doesn't require those mechanisms to be impossible to disable, and there is a statement that directly reads that this shouldn't be abused to restrict third party software on the device. As such, I cannot find any link between Samsung's bootloader lock, which is applied globally and potentially just because Samsung decided it on their own, and the the aforementioned directive.

@untsuki I see more concerning things lately, about age verification app tech requirements which are basically incompatible with how installation of alternative OS-es done on Android-based phones and how these alternative OS-es work, e. g. without installation of Google Play services by default or by cutting it away "with meat and bones" to improve security and privacy.

@koteisaev That's a separate, but very valid issue, but mostly about how age verification are incompatible with internet as a whole.

@untsuki Didn’t they make a followup saying that article was AI generated?

@Le3Kat I'm not sure if they made a followup themselves, but this article does seem to be AI-generated.But even if it isn't, it's just a lot of speculations about a speculation about a misunderstood law.

@untsuki It’s worth noting that the initial wave of concern originated not from official EU sources or reputable technology outlets, but from an AI-generated content site.https://xiaomitime.com/dont-panic-eu-isnt-ending-bootloader-unlocks-soon-59697/

@Le3Kat It paints a picture of either someone who wants a piece of both clickbait pie and debunk pie, or someone who doesn't really look into what they are publishing. :miku_not_like_this: (At least my comment was published, so like, the intentional malice I was assuming isn't something that doesn't seem to be at play here)
