I was hesitant to watch this video because the name suggested this will be just a historical thing, but it's actually what seems to be a well-researched piece both on history and current reality of PFAS chemicals contamination.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SC2eSujzrUY

English names for fiction tropes: "Deus Ex Machina", a greek name coming from the long greek tradition of making gods intervene with the heroes' journey on a whim to change it's course...Russian names for fiction tropes: "Piano in the bushes", because of some soviet short film parodying soviet documentary television tropes.

Meet Kit the arctic foxboy!I was thinking how arctic foxes go near human settlements in cold winter to find food leftovers in the garbage left by humans, and decided to make an character that instead searches for tech.Made with Vroid Studio and Inkscape.

Random manga reccommendation:"Misaki-kun wa Kouryaku Chara Janai" (also known as Misaki-kun is Unobtainable)It's a yaoi romcom (with a bit of crossdressing) about Misaki, a guy who is best friend of main character in a romance game. The whole plot revolves around the fact that main character isn't allowed to date Misaki by the rules of this world, and Misaki tries to make him give up and go romance girls like he supposed to, but he refuses. And all of that in the setting where there is no "reincarnations", just characters who are very aware that they are the part of the game.

I think I should start my own software philosophy based around the idea that "software is a tool", because I don't think any existing one goes enough into that direction.- If software works for a person, it's a good thing;- If software works agaist a person who uses it, it's a bad thing;- Above two points can coexist;- Alternative software may be better in regards of not working against, but may not work for a person;- FOSS software is like a tool you can recreate and fix even if it's manufacturer goes out of business, which is good but may not be crucial;- Software that may stop working because of server outage or other third party reliance should be considered rented and should be relied on with caution;- Software that changes workflow with updates may be a big issue in the way of a working person, it's completely fair to personally avoid that change for as long as possible;- Possibly more conclusions of the same general idea.So the course of action for devs:- Keep software that is reliable reliable, avoid unnecessary or opinionated changes that may break workflow, and allow reverting such changes for a long time without keeping fixes and other things out of date.- Help FOSS (and possibly any reliable "non-rented" software) alternatives work for more people, both by contributing to software and to community by helping and making tutorials. And course of action for users:- Choose software according to needs.- Be cautious with "rented" software.- Use means too keep software working for you until you are ready or cannot keep it working, be that downgrades or piracy.- In general, treat software as a tool, not as an ideological self expression, or as a fancy new thing to show off.- Don't be afraid to learn new software (be that alternative, new version, new kind of softwate) but do it if you have time for that.

Meet Tomi, merchant bard goober who doesn't really care about money, but will trick or charm you into you trading with him for the fun of it.As a bard, he is a storyteller accompanniying his stories with some music on a zinter (specifically japanese Koto). He never takes money for his performances. As a merchant, he mostly deals in useless trinkets, curious magic items, and soap. He has a lot of cheap soap for some reason. He can also mention modern business terminology for comedic effect.

Also, it wasn't painted or printed on t-shirt, but made with a process known as Cyanotype (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyanotype). Here's a photo of developing the print in progress!

There are some clickbaity news about EU supposedly forcing locked bootloaders, usually sharing or copypasting this article - https://xiaomitime.com/eu-kills-android-bootloader-unlock-starting-august-1-59449/ (tracking warning - there are trackers)Below is a comment I wanted to post directly to the said post, but unsure if it will pass premoderation, so I'll post it here too:While EU is definitely not perfect and some it's bills contradict their focus on human rights of privacy and right to repair, this article is uninformed clickbait at best. I implore you to, please, do a bit of your own research, read the actual directive (directive 2014/53/EU and regulation 2022/30) before jumping into conclusions and sharing this article. From my best attempts at understanding this, it only has to do with mechanism of verifying software for the wireless chips, which can be (and mostly already are) implemented without locking the bootloader. And even then, it doesn't require those mechanisms to be impossible to disable, and there is a statement that directly reads that this shouldn't be abused to restrict third party software on the device. As such, I cannot find any link between Samsung's bootloader lock, which is applied globally and potentially just because Samsung decided it on their own, and the the aforementioned directive.

@inex @Karcsesz There are some solutions people made using functions and abbreviations, see end of https://github.com/fish-shell/fish-shell/issues/288 or https://github.com/fish-shell/fish-shell/issues/9462 TL;DR adding this to config would do the trick (just tried it)function last_history_item; echo $history[1]; endabbr -a !! --position anywhere --function last_history_item

So... I finally finished it!https://jilinoleg.codeberg.page/scarlet-dice/It's a small web app to roll FATE dices and optionally send results to Discord using webhooks. It's small, around 20 kB, open source, and available for offline use through either HTML file download or Codeberg release download (which includes font and favicon).#ttrpg #software

@yura I have some points to add:- F-Droid is screwed- Compiling apps from source? you are screwed- Devs are forced to use ADB, or screwed- Any app that Google may not like is screwed (youtube revanced, newpipe, adblocks)- Any app that Google already blocked from playstore (including big names like Fortnite, and a lot of smaller stuff) is screwed- I am not sure how it works, but unless they send the entire whitelist of signatures to the phone or change how their signatures work, it will require internet connection. If you try to install stuff during outage by sharing APK, or if you want to use your device without internet connection at all - you are screwed

This is a thing I made several days ago. Eh... Meet Yoru, an outer space sea bunny boy. Who researches the earth. Like, as a remote worker. He doesn't visit in person. It didn't fit on pic, but his ears are radio antennas, and the helmet of his space suit is actually a bubble of air.Made in #Inkscape, font is Ubuntu Mono, background is from https://nightskystock.com/.

Sci-fi authors came up with insurrections, moral dilemmas, death and destruction, or at best artificial slaves that are like real humans, when it comes to AI, and wrote all the books as a cautionary tale. When writing about lab grown meat, they mostly came up with nothingburger problems like, that they cannot make some edible parts realistic, as they have nerves and it's practically a thinking being already, and several fans of foods that contain them are sad about that.Humanity still pours millions and millions into AI research and even more into product hype that barely simulates that artificial slave experience, and a lot of people still have something against lab grown meat and barely any research is being done compared to AI hype.
