But if that does not happen, then the absolute worst people inside the movement tend to rise to the top.I've read about the period between the first and second Russian revolutions, for example. Most of the factions did not want state power. The one that did eventually seized it, without much shooting.So overthrowing the old state looks impossible, but when the moment comes it just happens. 1/2

       @ReggieHere @DavidM_yeg @spencerbeswick Very true BUT in socialist societies the economy is run from the top and therefore people starve.The absolute worst people may be in DC in the USA but they are not responsible for the day to day operation of the food production system, so there is food in the stores.That is why capitalism, despite all its problems, is more pleasant to live under than most socialism.However, with the growth of monopolies, they may not be much difference left.

If it was, it could "overgrow" capitalism. That has not happened.All the socialist systems that have gained a place in the world were nasty and coercive.The most successful "socialism" was a welfare state on top of capitalism. Maybe automation and AI will extend that approach."The purpose of socialism is communism."
