I'm not sure how aware younger folks are of just how wild it is that for *decades* the only standard consumer DC power jack we had was the *automotive cigarette lighter receptacle*

@ricci But is it any wilder than the current standard having data lines?

@ricci Even my most recent car, from 2024, has a cigarette lighter port. I referred to it as such and then had to explain to my children what that was, and how absurd it was that such a thing even existed. It led to a neat conversation about legacy technology though and terms like “rewind” and “hang up” and such that made sense when they were coined.

@ricci and it did its job and had multiple uses, plain and simple, without needing to update the driver..#amsorrywillgetmycoat

@bituur_esztreym well, except for the fact that you couldn't necessarily predict its voltage, which would spike when you started the engine...

@ricci @bituur_esztreym Also it often felt about as nice to plug in as stepping on a banana barefoot (I have the same complaint about the SCART video connector, just absolutely terrible plug-in feeling)...... and some genius car manufacturers oriented the socket vertically, so if you lost the lighter or otherwise left it open, a lost coin was enough to blow a fuse 🤣

@ricci Are cigarette lighters even in cars anymore?

@ricci Still have them. They still work. The last time I used was to charge someones cell phone.

@ricci So much so we deal with minor generational trauma: my wife refuses to learn the two types of usb connector we have (micro and C) because she firmly believes it is too complicated. We’ve trained a whole cohort that it’s impossible to know anything.

@ricci I’m not sure younger folks are aware of AC/DC.

@ricciMy car (2024) still has one. It delivers a lot more power than the usb ports so has a 100w usb power adapter plugged in.

@ricci And *not* a very reliable connector at that. I supply 12VDC from my off-grid system to my desk and kitchen with those as the connectors for intermittent use, but for anything reliable such as my off-grid server I hard-wire.

@ricci BACK IN MY DAY we had ten-pound transformers hanging precariously off an outlet with a 12V automotive jack dangling off a cord. What a time to be alive
