@Nonilex Trump claims he is a moron to deflect obvious bigotry. Again.

@Nonilex Of course, he doesn't give a shit about birds. "Mr President, what other pro-bird policies are you enacting? Have you suddenly decided the environment is worth protecting? Why only birds?"Anyone who makes this argument needs to be asked why they don't argue that domestic cats be kept strictly indoors, since they kill a LOT of birds.

@rysiek I dunno. If they had kept the licenses in a cardboard box in an unlocked building and it got stolen, I would still put at least some of the blame on the thieves. Not all, but some.

@ricci So much so we deal with minor generational trauma: my wife refuses to learn the two types of usb connector we have (micro and C) because she firmly believes it is too complicated. We’ve trained a whole cohort that it’s impossible to know anything.

@futurebird I suspect that all the big tech companies are behind the sustained momentum. Age verification means credit card information, which they want. It means higher barrier to creating web sites, which they want. It means more complex regulation, which only big companies can afford to get right. It means more power and lock-in.

@aral @Codeberg Can anyone recommend similar services for private repos? I have a half-dozen private projects I want to keep in the cloud, and I want my resume hosted on a static site. Ideally something that runs forgejo, since we're using that for work, and hosted outside the US because <waves arms>.Sourcehut looks neat, but not sure it's mature yet.

@ricci I hadn’t considered it explicitly, but you’re right. If someone releases a new, brilliant programming language tomorrow, adoption would be even more stunted than usual because the AI would lack a training set and be unable to help. It reinforces use of old systems.

@ricci My hope is that these two things cancel. If we can’t change any system because AI needs it stable, then all of our old interfaces will still work, and we avoid lock-in. If we innovate, the AI is locked out. Maybe I’m missing something big tho. Like a making the old stuff even more Byzantine so we need AI to navigate it?

@Nonilex I’m guessing most of this will go for white spray paint to be applied to all the Black people.

@gutenberg_org @tchambers FFS. “Tech” does not mean computers. “Technology” certainly does not. Pencils are a technology. The wheel is a technology.

@tomjennings @gutenberg_org @tchambers Lens grinding is a technology. Glass making is a technology. Although commercialization is tied to some connotations, any application of science can be called a technology, even if it’s not good for making money yet. Like TeV-scale particle accelerators

@Nonilex I don’t understand why people care about dynasties. I would much rather know his position on progressive topics than his genealogy. I get it’s not nothing: I’m a son of a university professor. That absolutely helped me understand the workings of a university when I became a professor.. but it didn’t make me a -good- professor and wasn’t a credential for the job.

@futurebird We had a friend who happily announced that she got rid of books soon after reading because having books crammed in everywhere made a place seem stuffy and old. Needles to say we ignored her aesthetics advice from that moment on.

@futurebird I actually ... don't hate this. Supervision (i.e. moderation) is an issue, but assumably could be done similarly to sports or clubs (putting yet more burden on overworked teachers, but that's another issue.(But also too: school dances and sporting events and yearbooks all had the express purpose of showing me just how excluded I was from the community. Same will happen with this.)

@futurebird Let me validate your choice: I went and really really wish I hadn't.But yeah, your point is taken. And sometimes there's a quiet kid who can write like an angel and has the most interesting thoughts. Maybe they'd share.

@futurebird A bit. I used Auth0 as an intermediary, which allowed low volumes for cheap/free and was easier to set up than doing oauth2 from scratch. But that was a few years ago now.

@futurebird This exactly. What teachers need IMHO is more tools to help associate the student names to their faces to their thinking.
