Not even the US had it because treason is defined in the Constitution and the Alien and Sedition Acts were signed in 1798, which restricted speech on the grounds of national defense.Stux is in the Netherlands, which has strict laws against hate speech and criminalizes facilitation of it too, so servers he owns must ban speech that violates them or he will get in trouble as well@stux

I think the problem with "free speech" is that there's no such thing as absolute free speech, if for no other reason because of spam and illegal content.So everyone has a limit somewhere, and the only real question is what's the vibe you want in your instance. I'm of the opinion that we need different kinds of instances with different rules and different atmospheres, and as long as someone is creating a place where people enjoy spending time together, there's really no wrong answer regarding how that instance should look...

@cjd @stux I agree but the issue is media and platforms limiting permissible speech shaping society to the desires of a few. I see the solution differently, online public spaces should not be able to restrict public participation, let everyone set their own filters to get rid of what they dont want to see. In real life and real public spaces it is a lot harder to achieve as people deserve more rights to restrict what offends them, at least let human nature develop naturally online.

@stux Yeah, I think what is worse is that there are journalists, pundits & comedians who are countering the propaganda spewing forth from the White House, but they are quickly fired or have their shows canceled by networks owned by major companies needing government approval for in unrelated fields.
