About 2 years ago, I was told by a doctor I'm on the #Autism spectrum. My whole life, I've been eating poorly because I have a problem with textures. Generally anything wet/soft that has to be eaten with a fork makes me gag. One time I tried to force myself to get past it by eating those things anyway. Rather than making the problem better, it got worse. Is this an autism thing? How did you get past it? I forgot something important tonight, so I figure it's time for a fix before it gets worse.

@dangero> I have a problem with textures ... Is this an autism thing?Definitely can be.> One time I tried to force myself to get past it by eating those things anyway. Rather than making the problem better, it got worseProbably best to work within the range of things your body is ok with eating, while still trying to get enough micro-nutrients. Sensory aversions can be clues to things that won't digest well, and forcing them down seems like counterproductive self-torture : (@FreakyFwoof

@strypey @FreakyFwoof The reason I did it was because my parents told me that's what I had to do, and that I just had to suck it up and deal with it. Unfortunately, there's not much knowledge about Autism around here. That's the reason I found out 2 years ago instead of when I was younger.

@strypey @FreakyFwoof The running theory behind me not learning about being on the spectrum between my brother and I seems kind of paranoid, but I certainly can't disprove it. My brother told me he believes that, since we live in the southern US, and since most people around here aren't very fond of people with disabilities, my parents weren't big on having a child with 2 disabilities and made no move to get me tested for autism. To this day, my father still refuses to believe it.

@dangero > my parents told me that's what I had to doSame. They only relented after the night I spewed up and entire meal of liver and kidneys, after swallowing the chunks whole to avoid both the taste and texture exposed while chewing them .> there's not much knowledge about Autism around here. That's the reason I found out 2 years agoAlso same. It's quite the ride, eh?@FreakyFwoof
