Wow, another "community service" pulled a sale ala ADSBexchange, Reddit. Are we really that vulnerable to someone waving a checkbook in our faces?https://bikepacking.com/plog/when-we-get-komooted/

@ai6yr> neither a moral failure nor an outlier but the #capitalist system of value extraction working exactly as intendedI wish people would stop using made up terms and call #slavery slavery

@nobody @ai6yr "I wish people would stop using made up terms and call #slavery slavery"And I wish people would stop calling "having a job" slavery, but honesty is in short supply these days.

@AlexanderKingsburyWhy, you think it's honesty we lack? I think it's the opportunity to brake and look back@ai6yr

@nobody @ai6yr Yes, I think that anyone who equates simply having a job with being a slave is not only dishonest, but deeply unfeeling towards the millions of actual slaves that there are in the world today. To compare what they are going through with a voluntarily held job is far, far worse than insulting.

@AlexanderKingsburyOK I'm not playing this game. The original post was motivated by my recent skimming of Graeber's "Debt" where he demonstrates how"Markets" and "currencies" (and the whole notion of precise quantification of stuff) do not really emerge without the early state ("actual slaves"), and are procured together with the press gang for the needs of taxation and war logistics. The "evolution" from chattel slavery to modern employment contracts is a fairly uncontroversial idea@ai6yr

@AlexanderKingsburyErgo, "there's no capitalism", and no it's not about "simply having a job", and yes I will compare "actual slavery" to any other system that involves "policing" and "legislation", including police-enforced property. Sorry if that makes you unhappy@ai6yr

@nobody @ai6yr There also is some moral failure involved if you pretend it to be a community thing, only to then rug pull the deal. That's rather, well, dishonest. The fact that employees weren't paid in equity also doesn't pass honesty sniff test. There never was the intention to share financial success it seems. In short, they were conned big time leveraging "passion".

@koen_hufkens> moral failureIIRC Finnish Oy (LLC) law says they exist to (and only to) generate profits. In a sense they are required to use all tools at their disposal, including "brand development" ("betrayal")?> equityYeah that's one reason I recently came to feel less uneasy about subcontracting than about employment. In a system where "ownership" (in the legal sense) is a thing, contributing to something that somebody else (and not you) "owns" seems 100% counter-productive. @ai6yr

@nobody @ai6yr On the contracting. Whenever a company (or someone) appeals to your "passion" they are not worth it, so you might as well double the rate.

@nobody @ai6yr Oh, if other people being dishonest made me unhappy, I doubt I'd ever smile again. This sort of nonsense is FAR too common for it to get me down much.
