I'm reading a geology book written in 1989 and it says that the theory of the extinction at the end of Cretaceous (dinosaurs) was caused by a meteor impact that was on the edge of - and created - the Deccan plateau India. I'm super curious to hear the scientific meta that shifted the theory to the current belief that it was an impact on the edge of the Yucatan

In case you were wondering why I am reading about the Deccan plateau while driving through Idaho, the theory (at least when this was written) is that the Columbia plateau in the PNW was formed the same way (meteor impact triggered basalt flood and kicked off a volcanic hotspot - near India this resulted in Islands, in North America this gave us Yellowstone)

@uastronomer @ricci couldn’t fractures in the rocks give a strong enough indication? Maybe it just hadn’t been cataloged, the fracturing was missed, or the scale not noticed?
