@bornach Interesting, but I gave up halfway exhausted by the YouTube ads; we definitely need an ad-free technical video channel

@josyb @bornach Serving video is expensive. Content creators want to reach large audiences. This is true of both content creators who want to make money, but also of creatives. They want a lot of people to see what they made. But it's very hard to run a high traffic video site if you don't exploit the traffic with advertising. I don't know what the solution is. If I make a video about ants I'm putting it on YouTube or TicTok because I want thousands of people to see it and comment.

@futurebird @josyb @bornach I once looked into standing up a federated video hosting service but the bandwidth and storage needs were just too prohibitive.

@housepanther @josyb @bornach I'm really glad that people are still working on this issue because the notion of a leftwing media purge isn't unfathomable considering the gutting of legacy media. There isn't much left content as it is, but it could all easily be banned and that WOULD have a huge impact. Maybe such a purge would inspire people to band together and fund alternatives.

@housepanther @josyb @bornach I mean this has happened with twitter basically. And it seems like people have landed on bluesky instead. Which isn't really safe either but we can learn some things from how all of that went down.Nonetheless what we are growing here may only become more important.

@futurebird @josyb @bornach Bluesky is still corporate social media. It’s just jumping from one burning building to another.

@housepanther @futurebird @josyb @bornach One thing is that serving video being expensive is not a technical problem — technical solutions have existed for over two decadesIt's the non-technical issues that are formidable

@sabik @futurebird @josyb @bornach Oh most definitely. The barriers are not technical.

@housepanther @sabik @josyb @bornach The barriers aren't technical however the sheer expense of "I'll just host my own video" is a material barrier a few individual cannot easily overcome.

@futurebird @sabik @josyb @bornach You need petabytes of storage and probably a 10GbE line coming into your home. Beaucoup dollars! 💵

@futurebird @housepanther @sabik @josyb @bornach I'm rather fascinated and concerned by the fact that our entire online world is supported by advertisements. Not only because, of course, it is a horrible experience, but because I'm certain it just doesn't add up.Has any normal person ever even clicked on an ad intentionally?Does any normal person *read* ads when they show up on pages instead of just reading around them? Why would anyone do that? And yet ads pay for our world.
