Strictly speaking people leaving your city is bad. It's bad for the economy and bad for neighborhoods and safety. But NYC residents do not understand this at all. All most people think about is "maybe I could get their apartment" and how nice it would be if you could do any activity ever and not have 20 other people trying to do it too in the exact same spot. I'm just saying the "people will leave!" admonishment doesn't land at all.

@futurebird SO SO TRUE. A vibrant city attracts people; a city that people are fleeing are ones where the things you like all gradually thin out...where shops are closed, where buildings stand empty--not a great place to be.

@futurebird They really don't, myrmepropagandist. Some will go to any lengths to suffocate the competition. In the meanwhile, they are hurting themselves in the process, because those apartments that become available, will be much more expensive.. Everything, will be more expensive whenever there's little competition...

@futurebird yes. And an urban area with 20M people doesn't care who comes and goes. A million people leaving would amount to just a rounding error in the population count.

@futurebird I've been hearing about New York's impending collapse my whole life and it's never happening

@futurebird reminds me a bit of Stephen Miller's claim that if he ethnically cleansed LA it would make everything great because it would un-crowd the schools and emergency rooms. That's not how it works.

@futurebird we are moving to upstate NY with plans to spend time in the city ESPECIALLY if Mamdani is elected. I'd love to see it.
