...Remember the Howard Stern interview w/ Trump, 2005, he joked about how he could go in the dressing rooms of Ms. Teen USA. Because "it's like I'm inspecting it."...And then there were allegations from some participants that YES this happened. Even if it didn't he and Stern thought it was very ha ha funny. And nobody cares. This has no bering on the credibility of any other evidence of similar behavior. Am I taking crazy pills?

@futurebird He wasn’t “Trump” at that point either, and I always felt like that and the Access Hollywood tape was the closest we ever got to never having to deal with him. But once the Republican Party decided they weren’t going to boot him, that just gave him and their voters tacit permission. And ever since ……..

@futurebird Seems to be confusion (not yrs) due a collision between absolute acceptance of treating women & girls this way (entitlement, abuse = funny, etc.) and their belief in a nefarious "deep state" that their hero is going to rout. I think the attractive conspiracy for them is really the deep state (which also has antisemitic overtones); the opprobrium about sexual abuse makes it more lurid but it's not the main draw. (not sure if this is making sense)

@futurebird just watched the closing ceremony of the (men's) FIFA Club World Cup, and there were no protests despite he being there; the most unrest I could see was a few players hiding sponsors' logos on their shorts

@fivetonsflax I guess that is where I keep getting lost. I see people so deeply upset that children are being exploited, but it's just not about that at some level. Or they are happy to take any technicality or smear of the victims as an excuse to stop paying attention. People who were working for him in a talent show were trying to put on their clothes and he thought it was so funny to violate their privacy.And there was nothing they could do about it.

@futurebird I think there are two things going on here. First, this spent a lot of time on a slow boil against - some people thought - the Clintons and their circle. So there were a bunch of people who would normally dismiss anything against Trump immediately who have worked themselves up into a lather, and it might be too late to get many of them to do their usual deflection Second, this thing is very much about "the elites" and what "they" don't want "you" to know, there are a significant number of people for whom releasing the Epstein files is emblematic of fighting the elites, hiding them is a sign you *are* "the elites". There are a shocking number of people who have failed to recognize that Trump is pretty much the poster boy for "the elites" - this may in fact get them closer to that realization

@futurebird I've said this before but Trump is "identity politics" for assholes.The people who love him love him BECAUSE he is an asshole. They'd be in the girls' locker room too if they could get away with it. Mocking a disabled reporter seems perfectly normal. They see an Obama or Clinton or even a Bush and fundamentally these people Know How to Behave, and they don't feel represented.

@futurebird I think Trump is basically a meme-stock: people who buy into him aren't thinking rationally. He exists outside of normality. Even if you might otherwise abhor rape, he's not a real person and his actions are somehow also not real and do not have real consequences. This is politics as reality TV

@futurebird 🤷♀️ Most people are group animals doing what the group does… especially in times of turmoil. We have nice experiments like Milgram’s and Elliot’s showing instances of such behaviour. Humans may be smart in cooperation but they are unreasonably stupid in competition. Guess what? We’ve made social relations competitive and part of money schemes and now we virtualise some mirror life in a way that’s telling us it’s OK by AI… 🥶🧠🔨
