@futurebird He wasn’t “Trump” at that point either, and I always felt like that and the Access Hollywood tape was the closest we ever got to never having to deal with him. But once the Republican Party decided they weren’t going to boot him, that just gave him and their voters tacit permission. And ever since ……..

@Nonilex I’m not religious … but actions and governments like this one almost make me want to believe there is a heaven where Breonna gets real justice and peace And one that clearly these fake-ass “Christians” would NOT get into

@Nonilex Democracy clearly depends on Starlink alternatives. That isn’t going to come from the US. Hopefully Europe or another democracy could invest in an alternative.

@futurebird I’ve been getting back into Minecraft more lately as well, probably for similar reasons. Although I had decided some time ago to take on the challenge that is Elden Ring. That was work, but good work where you have to really hone your method. But I’ve been needing something that is more creative and where I can make it as challenging or easy as I want - enter Minecraft.I’m also feeling some Stardew Valley nostalgia, so I’ll probably start that back up in the fall.

@futurebird @guitargabe I totally agree. New Mexico just passed a regulation banning cell phones in classrooms, and I’m really bothered by that as a parent.I also don’t think it’s a strategy that helps them learn how to develop healthier relationships with technology. There was a good discussion on this on NPR disputing Haidt’s premise that cell phones are causing mental health issues (causal claims are usually statistically suspect). They countered that instead…

@futurebird lol, boy I feel your reaction. I have a matcha every morning (I can’t stomach coffee or black teas anymore -please shed a tear for me). I’ve gotten to where I really like the low-key ritualism of making the matcha. It’s a meditative start to the day. This doesn’t feel meditative, and seems like it would be really messy?

@Nonilex Tbis isn’t only about anti-DEI. What they effectively decided is that any administration can yank around research by cutting funding that was awarded under a previous administration. Without important continuity, research that isn’t bound by presidential terms can’t happen … which is most research, especially medical or technological developments and testing. In their hyper-focus on anti-DEI, they are eroding far broader foundations.

@futurebird the retort I keep hearing from folks is “yeah but now it won’t be covered by insurance.” I haven’t heard anything definitive yet, but I keep thinking that actuaries may be our last line of reason? Wouldn’t it be in the insurance companies’ interests to not have so many sick people and this still cover the shots?

@futurebird Summarizing is a great strategy with several good studies behind it (generative learning theory). It’s a shame it’s one of the most susceptible to LLMs.

@futurebird I like the wording of “don’t know of.” This isn’t something that people discuss a lot.

@futurebird Here, local restaurants are offering free soup, bread, etc for those on SNAP. But I wonder how many people will take advantage of that as it means self-identifying publicly in front of restaurant staff and others who are there.

@futurebird I loved this blog post by @inthehands on liberal arts education so much so that I folded it into my Week 1 readings for my AI ethics class and we used it to frame and set the stage for class … and had an amazing semester being curious about unknowns. Many years ago, I’d read the original “greats” on this and always strove towards it, but over time had gotten worn down by bureaucracy and habits. This provided such a welcome refresh:https://innig.net/teaching/liberal-arts-manifesto

@futurebird 3. Fixed times don’t work for me - if I’m still focused, I just burn right past them. If I run out of steam before, then I’m just done and it’s time to do something different. The hard part is getting chunks of time when I can even do this. It used to be more feasible, but lately my schedule has not left many windows for just sitting and doing / thinking.

@Nonilex Someone wrote that for him, trying to sound like him in spots. It doesn’t map neatly to his rhetorical style. The “good and proper” bit really sticks out like a sore thumb, but even the rest of it sounds like someone trying to sound like him. He probably tore into some rant and someone tried to write it up as a response. No less stupid … but I think it’s important that he’s not truly the only one speaking / writing here.
