7-Zip is a free and open-source file archiver for Linux, Unix, macOS, *BSD & Windows. Recently they released version 25 which on Windows can now use more than 64 CPU threads for compression. There are no Ads or cloud registrations. It is a good app for everyone.Download link https://7-zip.org/What's new in 7-Zip version 25? https://www.7-zip.org/history.txt

@nixCraft Reminds me of when I was annoyed at people posting manga as PNG files compressed in ZIP files (cbz format) or RAR files (cbr format) - why people are taking compressed files and compressing them further? So I took a manga and compressed it in many different ways. Sure, it wasn't a comprehensive research, I just took a single Oyasumi Punpun volume, but I found the results interesting. This results table is in Portuguese but the important thing is the numbers: 7-Zip wins for lossy and lossless, but, weirdly, if you use BMP to store images, as it's uncompressed, it allows 7-Zip to work better and results on a smaller file than if you used PNG! It was 2017, lossless AVIF nor JPEG XL were a thing, and WebP hadn't that much support.

@qgustavor @nixCraft my guess is people wanted something like tar but didn't know tar is a thing.

@shironeko Sure! People just use the tools they are used to. Weirdly, if you check my table, if you use zip as if you were using tar (by first archiving the files using a zip without compression then compressing it after) it outperformed RAR. Again, I guess the small sample size was to blame, but it was weird.

@qgustavor btw, I wonder if the gain you see from bmp+7z is from intra frame compression, since manga likely share the same sequence across pages that image formats can't exploit.
