The revolutionary act we need to make is to abandon the world wide web. Email has tracking etc but it's the web that's the lost front.

@tomjennings @BenCollver I'm sorry, there is no way that site was coded in FrontPage 98. It is still a work of genius however

@tomjennings The www is not itself to blame. It’s the browsers that caused the downfall. We were seduced by HTML and CSS and JavaScript. It’s time to rethink just what a browser should be and do.

@omz13 But it's such a monstrous task, defined as a moving and astronomically complex target by Google and Apple, that literally no one can write one thats "compatible" (sic) with eg. Amazon.com, and more fundamentally, no one will change their personal habits, so there's that.Firefox is the best we've got and it seems precarious.

@tomjennings Did you miss the bit where I said a rethink. A web browser is a mess of complexity precisely because of HTML and CSS and JavaScript. If we start from scratch, go back to first principles, and proceed with intent, then something better can be on offer. Compatibility is not needed because it’s a fresh start. #GeminiProtocol is a bit too limited and too niche, but it’s an example of some alternative thinking. We need more of that. Being compatible sometimes just isn’t worth it.

@omz13 Lol, I did miss the part about a fresh start! oops sorry. There are (old) browsers that can render modest html, at least, doubtful html5.But to your point, rethink. I'm all for it. It would be hard to imagine less than current HTML5 and CSS and still use the word "web".I toyed with gopher, but is old, and too primitive, too 1995. Its brutally simple, but probably too much baggage. Were so used to interoperability BECAUSE IT IS A REALLY GOOD THING! that moving towards a new protocol would be a hard sell.
