@aral What a flashback to 1987. Damit I’m old because I remember when this came out.

@aral @laura It’s not really centralisation to blame specifically but, as always, a chain of events leading to failure (the Swiss Cheese Model). Unfortunately, the holes have been getting bigger, and everybody has been winging things for too long because “everything works fine”, um, until it doesn’t and then “BSOD”.

@aral That’s because big company developed a solution for their specific needs not yours. If your need and their needs align, great (but probably unlikely unless you’re into homogeneity), otherwise, if you need a solution, develop it yourself (yeah, sometimes you gotta roll your own) or look elsewhere.

@thisismissem @trwnh @julian @pfefferle @manton @samsethi @renchap @andypiper Beware those stop gap solutions that become permanent instead of temporary in nature.

@aral Except for a few cases like this, my Touch Bar has been unused. Apple invested so much in it, and it noticeably bumped up the end user price, but was so underwhelming. Lack of physical escape a mistake. Lack of haptic was a mistake. Inability to find the keys on the bar by touch was also an issue. We all just wanted something like a mini Lebedev keyboard up there.

@strypey X.500 for email (via dialup X.25). Yes, I was a very early adopter. Yes, I’m “old”. #RetroComputing

@tomjennings The www is not itself to blame. It’s the browsers that caused the downfall. We were seduced by HTML and CSS and JavaScript. It’s time to rethink just what a browser should be and do.

@tomjennings Did you miss the bit where I said a rethink. A web browser is a mess of complexity precisely because of HTML and CSS and JavaScript. If we start from scratch, go back to first principles, and proceed with intent, then something better can be on offer. Compatibility is not needed because it’s a fresh start. #GeminiProtocol is a bit too limited and too niche, but it’s an example of some alternative thinking. We need more of that. Being compatible sometimes just isn’t worth it.

@aral I guess we need to get our bingo cards ready for what comes next: leadership, growth, grants, sponsorship, etc.

@aral If you can’t trust your current OS, then you need a better OS and/or better (more stupid) hardware to operate in. I would not be surprised if somebody did dedicated hardware with software updates done by swapping EPROMS, because it seems like we need to go backwards to go forwards.

@wjmaggos Everything is biased: algorithm or no algorithm; corporate or personal; centralized or decentralized; etc. It just depends how far you’re willing to compromise.
