#CBMacPherson . 1962. The Political Theory of Possessive Individualism: Hobbes to Locke :🙸Some time ago I suggested that English political thought from the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries had an underlying unity which deserved notice. I called the unifying assumption ‘possessive individualism’ and suggested that central difficulties of liberal-democratic thought from John Stuart Mill to the present might be better understood if they were seen to have been set by the persistence and deep-rootedness of that assumption. The notion of possessive individualism promised also to yield a fresh understanding of the main seventeenth-century political theories, in some cases resolving unsettled problems of their meaning.#tg630899697🧵

@monarchist @tymoty Egalitarianism and Individualism are usually opposed terms. Just few people from the left agree with that.

@waltercool @tymoty The latter in groups creates the former.Individualism = me first, but in a group, this turns into manipulation of others through APE (altruism, pacifism, empathy) including equality.
