One of the things that always baffled me when I was a kid (still kind of does) is the following kind of interaction..Some adult: “do x thing” (x seemingly a small, insignificant action, event or state)Me: “nah I’m good”Same adult: *insists that I do the thing*Me, getting a little frustrated: “I’m not feeling it and you still haven’t given me a good reason to do it”Same adult: “Oh my god why are you making such a big deal out of this! Just do it!”Even as an adult I don’t understand this. If it’s not a big deal, why would they still be insisting that I do the thing? And if it’s a big deal, surely they can easily tell me why I should do it? Either it’s a big enough deal for me to do it against my other wishes and for the reason to be easy to articulate or it’s not. Adults were getting worked up over the smallest, meaningless refusals growing up. Then they would turn around and tell me with no irony I couldn’t take “No” for an answer. 🤔 Truly baffling. I honestly think a lot of adults are just cognitively rigid and then expect their kids not to disrupt their personal systems for smoothly operating in the small little island they slowly built for themselves as they themselves grew up.

@mrjunge Most people just do stuff. But I do think they should be more flexible about refusal. Also my parents make proper use of please and thank you.Adults treating their kids as free labor isn't something I approve of, but I don't hate it. I wouldn't do it.

@Paradox I have to be in the mind state to do something. My ADHD brain already has 10 tabs open or latently processing in the background even when I am idle, so just hoisting a demand on me without warning is something I am not going to just jump to do without doing the work of closing every tab or waiting for my brain to reboot so I can switch tasks or my task mode. This is even more the case if I do happen to be in hyperfocus and I have to do the 5 minute effort to produce a perceived sense of closure on what I am doing before I am able to switch tasks.
