With the new developments from #ghost #wordpress etc, we need to evolve from RSS readers to #ActivityPub readers. See the title or article description but then click to see the whole thing. And have it be converted to speech and played. And be able to like and boost it. And have it queue up the most popular stuff from the people we follow. And eventually pay writers directly for time spent via an open fiat transfer protocol. That's what I wanted from #pocket and now from @instapaper.

@wjmaggos is Mastodon not an "ActivityPub Reader"?

@schizanon in a very limited way. it basically shows titles/summaries and allows for likes/boosts. the key is that ghost and wordpress are going to be bringing in longform content that mastodon won't display well (besides text to speech etc).that's what RSS and email newsletters (substack etc) have done well but AP is built for but hasn't been taken advantage of yet.to really exploit the potential here, we need readers designed for the fedi. #SocialWeb

@wjmaggos RSS doesn't really handle content well either; you can embed some HTML formatting in it, but it's kind of hit or miss as to whether that gets escaped or not. Most people want actual page loads on their websites so they just abbreviate content. Readers may follow the links and embed the full page in an iframe. Is that what you'd want?

@schizanon on this podcast, they said AP supports longform content where you can embed a whole article. showing me whatever can be put in that field would probably be perfect for me. since I almost always have it read to me, anything extra isn't useful. perhaps they want the page loads for ads etc, but that's then why we need a pay-per-time-consumed system enabled by an open fiat transfer protocol etc.https://about.flipboard.com/fediverse/john-onolan-and-matthias-pfefferle/

@wjmaggos I used to subscribe to Twitter RSS feeds back when that was a thing, but short form content, mixed in with blog and news articles was annoying. It goes the same way with long form content mixed in with short toots and headlines. They are pretty different browsing modes. That said, you there are many ActivityPub clients that support long content. https://phanpy.social is a good one because it embeds opensocial cards in the feed like Facebook and Twitter do, allowing for Quote Boosts

@schizanon yea in my dream world we'd only see short stuff here and people wouldn't post threads. but we'd also have readers and video players and podcatchers that could connect to our social graph too. they'd all be smart enough to optimize the experience.
