Turns out making one of the games that becomes an icon for a specific generation of titles and franchise that is commonly considered at the peak of video games may make this hard. Death Stranding may not be exactly the same type of mainstream but it's still mostly appealing to people who like big name Hollywood actors in their games.

@Kyonko802 @LolikingSama That's fair. Definitely funny phrasing though. He's hit a lot of check marks for making a mainstream game in his attempt to fulfill all his desires for a game. Only real thing off about it in that aspect is the extremely unique gameplay, which I guess would stop a lot of people from making this into a MGS in their mind.

@Iffine @LolikingSama Death Stranding is in a very unique position. I don't really like how much of a westabo Kojima is but his games are undeniably Japanese. I still remember how much people bitched and whined that the first game made you rub two brain cells together before it even thought about giving you a gun.

@Kyonko802 @Iffine @LolikingSama for the longest time i wrote off death stranding as a walking sim but finding out that many people saying that didnt get far at all and an acquintance of mine saying that the gameplay loop is focused on logistics has got me to reconsider playing it

@Vidmastereon @Iffine @LolikingSama it takes a while to get going but it does get going. People who like JRPGs didn't have any trouble getting into the game because they are used to long intros and mechanics being dripfed

@rainignterror1080p @Kyonko802 @LolikingSama I like the core gameplay loop. It's fun to set up structures that I know other players will find useful. I also enjoy the challenge of fighting BTs, raiders, and terrorists. But as with everything, ymmv. It didn't quite click for me until I was deeper running away from antimatter ghosts.

@Azur_Fenix @LolikingSama I give Death Stranding far more credit than that. The actual game, not the tutorial, is overly interactive. Disconcertingly interactive even. Tons of the game changes based on the server and player actions, and there's comical amounts of stuff to do besides. It just requires a time investment to get started. Not all that uncommon for longer games, but very uncommon if the expectation is that Death Stranding was going to be GTA or MGS1 (it was never going to be). It's not a Neil Cuckmann extravaganza where the gameplay is just an excuse for his gore fetish to show up in cutscenes and is just generic and boring outside of cutscenes.
