@stux I lived in Ottawa, Ontario for 10 years, never owned a car. The last 3 years, my GF (ex wifey now) had one, it was convenient since we went to her parents place a lot (2-3 times a week) and it was in the suburbs of Hull, Quebec, which didn't have great public transportation. It was mainly geared towards office travel.Ottawa had a great system, dedicate bus roads and highways (NO cars ever, only bus and ambulances (bonus, since both major hospitals were on a main line)).

@stux what are your feelings about motorcycles?Much smaller ecological footprint. I was car-free in SF for many years, but then I found that having two wheels expanded my spheres a lot.

@stux you can easily say "fuck cars" in the Netherlands, as you live in the most densely populated area of Europe, but not having a car in most towns is not up to each one of us

@stux it's almost 10 years I resigned from my last job and (one of) my goals in life is to never work again for the rest of mine 🙃 I have a car though but i use it only when necessary (2000 km/year)

@stux I dislike bikes, myself, they're more annoying and you have to pedal when you want to go somewhere, wasting your own energy on transport. luckily I don't need anymore, my mom sold the tamdem bike.

@stux Despite even living in a place with generally good public transport comlunications and schedules, sometimes I feel the necessity to drive a car, although I don't have one yet.

@stux I think it’s a great goal! I gave up my car (to our children), started biking to where I needed to be and never looked back! 15 years in and Covid hit, felt like I needed a car just in case so I have one now but I never drive it. My husband does and he does get me to the distant places. I definitely prefer to be a passenger and honestly now I cannot drive on the freeways, no way! :blobcatscared: :bongoCat:

@stux It is a lot more difficult to accomplish that in places like Western Canada, where the settlement and the development of cars nearly went hand in hand. Everything got spaced out to accommodate vehicles instead of walking and riding traffic within towns and cities, and public transport outside of cities is nearly non-existent.Also, winter is absolutely brutal because if the cold and bowing snow, although the last 20 years has seen a significant and worrying change in climate.

@stux yeah I got a Honda Rebel 250 first. A commonly recommended first bike. Most Hondas would have to be modified to make a lot of noise, you know, with a "performance" muffler. The loud bikes are usually intentional. People may say it's for safety because drivers hear you coming, but you know they like the noise.
