I'm looking for a theoretical physicist - also a student, or indeed anyone with a large knowledge in this subject area. @KatyElphinstone its not really a question, more of a subject area. Statistical Mechanics is the area of physics where the property of entropy is addressed. The word statistical refers to systems with large number of particles in various states, each such collection of particles and energy is called a partition. Entropy is a measure of the most likely partition, and the units are Joules per Kelvin. So a higher entropy system stores more energy per degree increase in temperature than a lower entropy one. The second law says that the most probable processes that may occur in an isolated system are those in which the entropy either increases or remains constant. One example being the diffusion of a drop of ink in a glass of water. In that case the most probable arrangement of ink molecules in the glass is to be evenly distributed through the water. You would never observe the ink suddenly coalescing back into a drop.
