Weird Computer ContestA contest to see the strangest computer being used to read mastodon/the fediverse. The prize is a cool drawing from me just for you. Rules:1. Post a reply to show your device and why it is strange. Can mean hardware and software. A photo is better. 2. You can't go too much out of your way to use some goofy device that you don't ever really use. 3. Winner selected by general consensus. This is *not* just an excuse to see/post photos of strange computers.

@futurebird I regularly see some unique devices with the #retrocomputing tag showing off their mastodon skills, but whether those same devices are used regularly, who knows.

@futurebird Apparently someone is running a fedi instance (I don't recall whether its Masto, Akkoma, Friendica or whatever), on a fridge.

@futurebird Apparently someone is running a fedi instance (I don't recall whether its Masto, Akkoma, Friendica or whatever), on a fridge.A FRIDGE. π Clearly this is highly impractical and merely an outlandish experiment, but still...I hope they see your post and reply!

@futurebird Everything I own is strange because I pretend my name is Edward Strange and call everything strange. My company is strange, my website is strange, my docker images are strange...everything is strange. Yes, so is my computer. It would look completely normal in a picture though. It's only strange when I look at it because my brain is strange too.

@futurebird - Not that unusual, but this old netbook was cripplingly slow on windows and after a bit of a fight is now rather nice to use on Lubuntu - Web browsing is still quite slow, but has a great keyboard and display and is snappy enough for terminal stuff, and runs VSCode surprisingly well

@futurebird if read-only mode counts, I have a Wyse WY-55 serial terminal next to my main workstation that scrolls my timeline all day... I use it to keep up with goings on in those awkward times when you need to wait 20 seconds for some command to complete or whatever...

@futurebird does not having a working camera qualify as strange? (Also, I don't have another camera to photo either of my computers with). (The only other strange things about my computers is that they are old; laptop is from 2012, the other from 2017, but budgeted for $300 at that time. )

@futurebird how about the shell of an old Samsung BT120AT, with the CRT and radio stripped out and a mITX motherboard, 5600G CPU, and SFX power supply crammed inside the housing (along with an LCD behind the original clear plexi screen protector)?I use this to drive our living room TV. Jellyfin for movies/shows, Firefox for web browsing, and Steam for a few lightweight couch games. It's running Linux Mint, so it's a fully functional modern computer!

@futurebird My *theoretical* answer to this that I've thought of but not done anything to achieve: the Gameboy Advance link port has a UART mode. Assuming it supports a compatible baud rate / etc., it should be possible to connect to a serial modem with an RS-232 voltage converter. The ARM7TDMI should be capable running some kind of network stack. Trying to type on one would be miserable, but showing messages on the screen should be doable.

@futurebird It's at least a week away from being truly usable, but I've been working on a DIY 7" tablet using a Raspberry Pi 4, the official Touch Display 2, and a 3A UPS board with 5,000 mAh battery. I've already done some reading on it, but that was plugged in, I really want to get it mobile on battery. I've thinned the components, and am 3D printing case parts right now. Just a bit more CAD and soldering...

@futurebird this is probably the strangest computer I own, that I can use to read Mastodon. It's double screen tft+eink book reader on Android 1.6. One can interact with it using tft touch-screen and there's also a button that syncs its content with the eink screen. In a book-reading app the tft display can be turned off, but that doesn't really help with the battery life anyway. Not gonna lie, using http proxy for opening https-only websites is not very smart thing to do regularly, but the contest rules ask to show Mastodon being red, so I'm doing it.

@futurebird This won't be even close to the strangest computer on Mastodon, but I love using the Apple II client on my Apple IIgs. It has an excellent interface, and I always find the text-only presentation soothing.

@futurebird Here is your contest post, shown on a 17β¬ noname LTE modem, powered by Android 4.4.The 128x128 LCD is the actual Android screen, but there is no touch and no keyboard support, so it needs to be steered by `adb`. Also requires reducing the screen dpi to the minimum and zooming out some more on the (embed URL of the) mastodon post until it's not really readable. The android status bar is flickering (but it's hard to make a video of).Hardware details thread: https://chaos.social/@ge0rg/114738637425365009
