Okay, the problem with being someone who fixes things, is everything is a potential project. Free sewing machine (filthy!). Was going in a trash bin, someone cleaning out their parent's house. All of it going in a trash dumpster tomorrow. I resisted a lot of other stuff, LOL. I suspect this will work fine after cleaning and lubrication. Appears to have been in a garage for 60 years. #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle #Repair #Projects #Sewing

@ai6yr that's one thing I love about the Repair Shop. First thing is to give everything a *good gentle cleaning*If you don't decide to keep it, maybe one of your local nonprofits who provide safe housing could use it? Or maybe the library? They could loan it like they do toys? Or a local community center that runs free workshops? And sorry for giving unsolicited advice ✌️

@kellyromanych Worst comes to worse, it goes up for free on Craigslist as "fully cleaned, repaired, and tuned up!". Someone will take it. That said, not a lot of people sewing anymore around here, IMHO... the thrift stores are overflowing with machines. I can use a zig zag stitch machine however. The main issue for me is to keep the projects-in-progress/pile-of-stuff down ha ha ha.

@ai6yr There used to be little businesses that specialized in the sale/repair/refurbishment of vacuum cleaners and sewing machines. Always those two together. I was referred to the one out in Woodland by a colleague in the ‘80s and last used the services of one in Ukiah, about twenty years ago.

Oh look, vintage thread. Already learned my lesson, this stuff isn't going to work, it gets brittle and breaks as it ages. This stuff you can break by pulling gently. #bobbins

Inside the top lid. I thought this was all plastic, but after some better light this entire machine's innards are metal! #sewingmachine #restoration

Just spent an hour oiling things. The "MAINTENANCE oiling" instructions were insufficient for identifying everything that needed to be oiled to have it start working. Maybe these are the spots that need oiling most, but there are dozens (dozens) of metal upon metal contact points where there is movement, and I had to hit every one to have things start moving again... this machine had NO trace of any sewing oil, so I suspect it did not get oiled per the manual. Montgomery Ward Model 1980B. No idea when it was actually made. (don't think 1980 corresponds to the year... but who knows!) #sewing #sewingmachine #restoration #repair

Well, it's got to be newer than 1970's, based on the pattern on that machine. Maybe it *is* from 1980?https://christmas.musetechnical.com/ShowCatalogPage/1970-Montgomery-Ward-Fall-Winter-Catalog/0363

AHAHAHAHA! 1980 catalog. There's the machine. 1980B, looks to be the same design of machine, or approximately the same. So this machine is 44 years old... way younger than my other sewing machine, LOL. It has a 25 year warranty on the head! (warranty has expired, as had Montgomery Ward). #sewingmachine #sewing #vintage #ReduceRepairReuseRecycle

The bottom of one of these machines. Very little was moving down here. Much lubrication was needed. Removed hardened grease near the bobbin and regreased it all. #repair #sewing gmachinerepair

@rustoleumlove @ai6yr I worked in the auto parts department of a Montgomery Ward in Daly City, CA in the 1970's. What I remember most is the food in the cafeteria, lol.

@ai6yr @rustoleumlove If you were into beef-like meat product on white bread, smothered in brown gravy, lovingly prepared by the staff of Montgomery Ward, it was heaven.

@ai6yr Holy crap! That was a pricey machine then! Conversion to contemporary USD is ~$1170.Believe it was manufactured by Happy Sewing Machine Co., Japan, though not certain exact age since Happy made machines for MW after 1955-?? The innards on those machines look like tanks, so much metal. No idea why people toss them when their scrap metal value must be $$.

@femme_mal Actually, looks like this one is probably 1981 or 1982... Check out this price... $489.95 in 1982 Dunno what that is today, probably a fortune!
