Uh, uh, Bsky is sooo "decentralized" 😆 https://status.bsky.appDon't make me laughIf it's truly self-hosted, you could run a working instance on an offline sub net without use of the internet 🤷

**In under a million bucksCause yeah, technically you /could/ run your own network of Bsky but if you have to own a server farm firstYou think running Mastodon is expensive? Ha, try a full Bsky setup

@stux This doesn't look like decentralization; it seems more like a distributed server network. I assume Facebook runs in a similar manner.

@mbrailer Correct 😉 You can save your data on your server but you need the Bsky network to ever do something with it

@stux This reminds me of GeoCities, in which people made pages that they "owned" but in reality were subject to the server for delivery.

@mbrailer Same like Discord where people think they "own a community" but in reality they just have a little room on a server of Discord

@stux Bluesky is a corporate entity. Nothing decentralized about it.

@stux as far as I know, bluesky has the capability to be decentralised, but they switched it off.

@Beachbum @stux So why and how does BS circumvent so successfully that they are federated, decentralized and open source? Why don't I find clear explanations on what BS is and what BS isn't? It would help me spreading the Fediverse.

@voorstad @Beachbum Well, in short.. Bsky uses the AT proto (https://docs.bsky.app/docs/advanced-guides/atproto) and technically you can setup a "server" where you can host your own Sbky profile data, so the "data" is owned by yourselfBut for much of the network to even function, like exachanging info (followers, following, posts, etc) it needs to go via their serversMastodon for example uses ActivityPub to communicate directly to another instance without the need of a service from Mastodon corp so to say

@voorstad @Beachbum I've been trying to get something of a standalone Bsky running but it's almost impossibleAnd to my knowledge, if you setup such a network, it is in-compatible with the Bsky network so techniacally you create a whole seperate network that cannot talk to Bsky
