Can we come to the conclusion that Red Hat only want to have a system that they and only they can control? https://blogs.gnome.org/adrianvovk/2025/06/10/gnome-systemd-dependencies/Please don't let those people take the control of the desktop ecosystem. "Free to choose" has always been one of the killer features of GNU/Linux desktop and those people are trying to kill it.

@jrballesteros05 Yes, it was known that IBM only permits systems that they can control and extract rent from (red hat is no more than a brand now as it was bought out by IBM).There is no ecosystem - only desktops made via hard work and the solution is to just keep using Xorg and decent desktop environments.

@jrballesteros05 Better be careful how loud you start complaining about “those people” or you’ll become social pariah just like the last guy that did that.

@paul Yeah, Gnome has been quite problematic in non-systemd distros, now it will be unusable. I don't use Gnome nor systemd and I personally avoid any Red Hat software but I have been forced to use systemd in many scenarios in the corporative world because of their crappy dependencies.

@alatartheblue I don't give a shit about Gnome and Red Hat as soon as they do their craps for themselves, I hate when they interfere in other projects and step by step they are becoming the facto standard. An example of this was when systemd wanted to add systemd and "Linux" only code in tmux:https://github.com/tmux/tmux/issues/428Gladly they didn't accept that abomination. I just want them to keep their crap for themselves if that's the case I don't mind but I know they are causing more upstream and downstream issues. In my personal computer I use Hyprland as well, a non-systemd distro and avoid Gnome and Red Hat's crap but in the servers I barely have choice. I choose GNU/Linux mainly because it's not Mac and is not Windows. To have a mediocre copy of those OS by forcing me to use their tools I would rather keep using the original proprietary crap.

@jrballesteros05 The worst part was when they attempted to introduce a kernel-level dbus (kdbus) under the guise of simplifying systemd's access to IPC calls (And probably absorb the entire kernel like they did with udev, coincidentally), but the Linux maintainers banned Poettering and his gang from contributing to the kernel due to bad code quality (LoL), but also probably because they knew what they were trying on doing

@phnt @jrballesteros05 There's to say that GDM gaining a dependency on systemd is similarly concerning, although only to run multiple graphical sessions under the same user (Which is actually an hack, since they still treat those internally as separate users, opening multiple can of worms, but their call, I guess)

@vokainen099 @jrballesteros05 I honestly have no idea why you would want to support that unless you are trying to mimick how Windows and RDP work. It seemed dumb to me from the start.I also don't like that they depend on dbus more and more because it's an insecure can of worms that cannot be fixed now. But it's not surprising since they've made it in the first place.

@phnt @jrballesteros05 It's probably to add support in whatever corporate context multiple "terminals" must be available in a graphical session at all times, since their engineers either can't work from the CLI, or they need to use graphical-only appsMost SCADA software systems that are browser-only or client-only would indeed need that available

@phnt >So what GNU/Linux users should do?> First, consider using Windows. It sounded exactly as many replies when I asked to work with GNU/Linux instead of Windows in any company.
