When I first came to Mastodon--specifically, on the #Fosstodon instance--I had already abandoned Xitter (the X makes a "sh" sound, like in Mandarin pinyin) for Bluesky, and I didn't think mastodon was ever likely to be my platform of choice--not enough normal people, too techie-focused, likely to be an echo chamber. I was very wrong about that. I've been slowly realizing that over the course of months, but today I had an important realization, and perhaps discovered a useful metric.

I've been noticing for a while that I'm a lot more eager to open my Mastodon shortcuts or tabs (depending on platform) than my Bluesky ones. I do still check in on Bluesky pretty frequently, but it feels mostly hollow. The realization today is simple: on bsky, I mostly just retweet. On mastodon, I mostly actually TALK to people--comments and posts from ME, not just blind echoes of what others have already said. Is it really "social media" if you don't actually SOCIALIZE?

The worst part is, on bsky, I'm rarely even retweeting (or reposting, or whatever the hell we're calling it this week) an original post: I'm usually retweeting a retweet from someone I follow. With no guarantee that what I'm RT'ing is even a FIRST generation echo--when I RT an RT, it doesn't show where I actually saw it, it only shows the original. For all I know, my RTs there are ten generations removed from the original actual source. Not exactly ideal.

@jimsalter I have a registered few account on a few services here and there in the fediverse, and while on this account (which is the only one left I use regularly) I mostly interact with tech related topics, the variety of people on different instances is actually scary. On the other hand, you can also kind of build your own comfort bubble, which for me is around this Fosstodon-type community. Admittedly I've never been on the Twits (or the Blues), so I can't compare.

@jimsalter bluesky will get rugpulled at some point. I don't see how that's even possible with Mastodon/the Fediverse.

@joeress @jimsalter ACK. I'm just wondering when I should be preparing my popcorn bowl to enjoy the BS exodus.

@iceqbe @joeress I wouldn't look for it to happen for at least another year, and personally, I'd give it five. It's gonna happen, though.

(2/?)But recent developments have given me pause. It's starting to feel like we're at a similar inflection point to the one that led to ActivityPub.Where 3 distinct families of decentralised social, all with thriving dev communities, and broadly similar goals of redistributing the network power hoarded by DataFarming corporations. Back then OStatus, Diaspora, and Zot, now it's AP, ATProto and Nostr. We could also add Spitely and their OCap work to the mix.

(3/?)The fediverse we have now didn't come out of zero-sum war between the 3 networks, "there can be only one!" style. But out of a standards process, aiming to incorporate the best of all 3 into a single protocol; AP. So the software projects using all 3 could unify into a single network (although a handful decided not to).

(4/4)I can see more and more signs of a similar thing happening again, with the fediverse, ATmosphere, and Nostr-space. Resulting in a combined network effect that makes it even more competitive with the legacy platforms.
