A reminder:even if training AI models on copyrighted works without permission of the author turns out to be legally ok, and under the "fair use" exceptions, you are still not allowed to create and disseminate copyright protected works with it.So, even if Open AI is in the clear for using Calvin and Hobbes in their training data, the user prompting this comic strip is not. @bonifartius A key difference:a base64 encoding is only made from that specific work and it can only be decoded to that specific work. The AI model itself does not have the work itself encoded in it, rather, descriptions of millions of works.If, for example, you made a book which contains a description of how Calvin and Hobbes look like, among 1000 other characters, that is legal. Using that book to create infringing new images is not.

@jimsalter I have a registered few account on a few services here and there in the fediverse, and while on this account (which is the only one left I use regularly) I mostly interact with tech related topics, the variety of people on different instances is actually scary.On the other hand, you can also kind of build your own comfort bubble, which for me is around this Fosstodon-type community. Admittedly I've never been on the Twits (or the Blues), so I can't compare.

@BrodieOnLinux Lazyness and not wanting to uproot my whole system. I have #DWM running on #archLinux (btw) and have an irrational fear of things going wrong if I start using #wayland, especially because I'm running on nVidia. I however have a separate disk which is formatted to ext4 and has a barebones Arch installation on it which I plan to use as a test bed to install Wayland on... some time in the future.
