@ricmac @_elena @cwebber @quillmatiq @snarfed.org @mike @marci @michael @newsmast @benpate @j12t @anca hate to say this, but if the aim is to _win_ over big tech, over centralised platforms, then the _pitch_ has to be for something people need/want, more than it's virtues. People want to be where their friends are. Federation and sticking it to big business is not gonna drive the numbers.

My goal is not to *win* vs. the corporate silos (just yet). First, we have to coexist with them. Nobody just ditched MySpace for Facebook. They signed up for both, then slowly ditched MySpace for a better network.Let's do the same thing. And this is where the Fediverse has a real strategic advantage:FB is for posts..IG is for pics..YT is for videos..You get the idea.. but *this one network* can do ALL of that and more.So, let's aim to Čôēxïşť first. Bring people here with music, art, literature, videos.. everything creators post elsewhere. @benpateThat's the issue I have with the way the fediverse is built: we don't actually have one network. I can't use my "videos account" to interact with your "music account". Because for some reason we copy-pasted the silos idea slapped a Libre License and called it a day, when we should have decoupled the account from the feature. Let app developers build apps, let backend developers build backends, and make an interface between the two: that's exactly what the Fediverse is not. Our common denominator is not the ActivityPub spec, it's the Note object and that's crap. @benpate but it's not what it can do, it's who's there. I'm on FB for old school friends I want to humblebrag to, and my mum uses it. I'm on Insta for my arty maker friends. I'm on YouTube because I like baking videos, and TikTok because it's funny. It's _Social_ media, emphasis on social. Bring the audience, bring people as one. Make it super easy to set up a server for you and your friends. Let federation happen quietly, and the decay of big tech will come for free.

@toychicken Yeah, I agree, we need "content creators" here - musicians, artists, writers - first posting alongside the others, then eventually posting on the Fediverse first.Sorry to offend the anarcho-socialists, but I think the creators will come when we give them the ability to earn money on the Fediverse.
