Why are peanuts not used in american cooking more? They are often treated as snack and desert only ... but they are so nice in stir-fry.

@futurebird not sure if it’s an upside or a downside of a CSA that you get presented with veggies way off your normal track. I was uncertain what to do last week with the giant bok choi, but a stir fry with peanuts and very little else made me ready for the next time the farm sends me home with one

@futurebird Am I weird for just not being fond of peanuts? I see a lot of people loving them and I remember my grandfather used to like to buy whole huge bags of them, but they just always tasted almost kind of weird to me. Peanut butter for some reason is a little better, but I'm still not super crazy about it.I guess though, the answer might be their rather strong taste. Most nuts are definitely more subtle and I think we use almonds in cooking the most which are probably the lightest tasting of them all.Just guessing though. I'm hardly a culinary expert!

@futurebird Probably awareness of how many people have issues with peanuts. Easier just to avoid it all.

@futurebird It seems to me that East Asian cuisines imported to the New World have embraced peanuts and peanut sauce as ingredients to a greater degree than most others.

@futurebird USians use a lot of peanuts as peanut butter, but I think that ended up associating it with "kid food," and historically they were seen as poor people fare - e.g. "they work for peanuts" - (they're a legume after all) so had some stigma there too.I'm sure someone with stranded peanut assets will eventually come up with some kind of superfood claim that catapults some particular varietal to the top of trendy shopping lists and then they'll be unaffordable thereafter.

@futurebird soooo many peanut allergies now in the US. Peanuts were likely used more widely in the past. Particularly in communities with formerly enslaved people, since peanuts arrived in North America from Africa. Lots of stews and sauces in Africa are made with peanuts.

@futurebird One of my favourite comfort foods is peanut sauce: blend salted peanuts, a can of coconut cream, garlic and chilli. Add milk until it's hit the right consistency and heat it.

@futurebird There are a lot of variations on the sweet potato and peanut soup that originated in western African cuisine... Every one I've tried has been delicious!

@futurebird I know some American meat eaters who are "willing to try" peanut butter on hamburgers, or have tried it, but they don't consider it a primary protein source. They think of it as a condiment. Unlike most of the world, and vegetarians.

@futurebird @medley56 I suspect they have lower production costs than peanuts. Cheap is king.
