a probably useless interview tip, if I’m running the interview: yes it’s a software engineer position but I will never present you with a puzzle or a whiteboard coding problem. I will, however, give bonus points for having worked retail, and extra bonus points for military service (enlisted only)

Fuck this timeline for making me feel bad for Mitch. He’s an evil bastard and I am not interested in having the smallest bit of sympathy for him. Fuck.

@tek I respect that, and I’m trying. I can think of a few ironic or poetic deaths that I would have cheered for. Unfortunately, professional and family history have a way of jumping out at me when a neurologist is clearly needed.

@tek definitely much easier if you put it the context of his whole life and career

@tek not that there’s anything a neurologist can do here, I’m guessing. and while I’m skeptical of blanket age limits for elected officials damn he and Dianne are making a case

@tek flywheel.io is not a bad place to work and we’re mostly even doing something constructive rather than selling eyeballs. I’m not involved in any recruiting or hiring but would be happy to talk generally about the company if you see a role you might be suited for

dashed out to our fantastic neighborhood cheese shop because dinner wanted a baguette alongside. Saw this in the cooler and couldn’t pass it by; the teenagers will either be overcome with nostalgia or utterly indifferent, it’s a coin flip #stl #longmont

@tek restaurant and bottle works a mile from where we lived in St Louis. Not somewhere we went often but they have fond memories. However, they’d both already noticed Fitz’s at the cheese shop and also an ice cream shop in town so not the big surprise I was aiming for. They were happy enough to split it though. (pretty unremarkable cream soda tbh. Their root beer is better.)

so last week the violist got a letter from Vanderbilt pushing their $60k scholarship for national merit scholars and today arrived the “oops, that’s $6k” letter. Not that there’s enough $ in TN to get her to move there anyway but yikes clown shoes, nose AND wig

spent about 8 years of 80% Scala and by far the most productive period of my career. I swore at it constantly but now I’m full time Java and drunk texting Scala (and Clojure) every weekend

Well, being the last one standing masking in public only got me so far. Dec 2023 and I just had my first + COVID test. Virtual urgent care and Paxlovid to come tonight

Well, I won? lost? the COVID-Paxlovid rebound lottery and am now improving again but still isolating and spending all my time in bed. Mostly sleeping but while awake watching lots of TV, notably including Stranger Things. Coincidentally shaved this morning but ran out of energy at goatee so I’m pretty much a dead ringer for the average of fat Hopper and gulag Hopper.

Also rewatched The Good Place and it’s as good as I remember, easily my favorite comedy of the last, say, 25 years. Chidi Anagonye might be my favorite sitcom character ever

@futurebird @trachelipus well, yes, but: rural white lower middle class will walk over glass to keep rural white poor from getting benefits. the outrage being behind someone paying with WIC/SNAP at the grocery…I mean yes also racist as hell. but the urge to be superior to the slightly poorer neighbors transcends race

@emjonaitis @futurebird @whknott statistics has the sad fate that some of its results turn out to be super useful to other fields that mostly don’t require much math. So “statistics” classes tend to be full of recipes that the students learn to use but not really understand and so misuse; while “mathematical statistics” classes are the point in grad school (after plenty of calculus as an undergrad) where I stopped feeling like I had a talent for math

@futurebird moment-generating functions. as a grad student in biology but working lots with random processes, I took some grad-level probability and mathematical stats. They had two tracks, described as with and without measure theory, with the understanding that the latter would hand-wave past some details but you’d be okay. It wasn’t the measure theory that bit me though, it was (I think?) discrete math. So much pushing symbols around with no understanding of what it all meant

moving into my new laptop, previously my wife’s, a 2012 MacBook Pro too slow to be a Mac but pretty snappy running #linux . This is the first time I’ve bare-metaled Arch, the CrossFit (or maybe veganism) of Linux distros, and I’m pleasantly surprised by how much just works, or works with a package install or a minor config tweak

@futurebird not sure if it’s an upside or a downside of a CSA that you get presented with veggies way off your normal track. I was uncertain what to do last week with the giant bok choi, but a stir fry with peanuts and very little else made me ready for the next time the farm sends me home with one
