@tomjennings Yes, and you can’t even pass the time with a rifle to induce casual near-extinction of a species!

@tomjennings As a child my parents sent me on a Hughes Airwest flight from Seattle to Chico in the early 1970s. That jet stopped at every runway between the two cities. It took forever to get there.

@tomjennings Anaheim - Santa Barbara is 4 hours. We can drive it in under 2. If there is lots of traffic it’s maybe 2:30. In exceptionally bad traffic (full holiday rush hour ) it can be 3. It’s never 4.

@timoj @tomjennings For my entire life I believed the story that we killed Bison exactly like this and almost made them extinct. It made me sad. I often shared the infamous picture of the pyramid of skulls. A couple of years ago, I ran across this article. Try and find that through normal search terms. It is difficult to find. I'm not forgiving our behavior in the US. It was still horrendous. But, consider this:https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0190052818300087

@nelson Yeah exactly. Probably more like 1-20 more hours; rare enough that it's been on time in my experience.

@loke No, there's an Amtrak train, sunset something, goes up the whole CA coast. It's just terribly slow and increasingly unreliable as it constantly gets funding and priority cut. It has to share freight rails.

@tomjennings Thanks. That's actually interesting. I've heard bad things about trains in the us, but this is even worse. My comment was an attempt at a joke about this thing that people in the us tend to mention 'oregon trail', or as I thought it was when I heard it the first times: 'organ trail'

@loke As a rule, most Americans hate public transportation and won't use it. It is also true that it's underfunded in most places (not all) and dirty, and homeless folks occupy t at times for lack of anywhere to go. We gots us some problems here ya see.

@tomjennings Sendai to Fukuoka is a little bit further than that, takes a little more than 7 hours by train
