@simon Thanks for writing this. That "global directory" is also where data from localStorage is saved. FYI some info about how that directory gets used (and re-used):https://deno.com/manual@v1.33.1/runtime/web_storage_apiYou didn't mention it in your piece but you can also open a Deno kv by specifying a local file.

@simon Very cool. In my mental model this works well because it's all language-oriented:- English to give instructions- Javascript is the output desired- The input data is HTMLIt doesn't need to understand anything about the outside world.

Interesting to see the #Sandstorm project on the front page of the Orange Site. From the comments there is clearly a desire for something like Sandstorm, and a lot of different opinions on why sandstorm didn't make it and how this should be built.https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=36192777

Great @changelog podcast with @adamhjk on System Initiative.I love that Adam is willing to go all the way to really solve a problem. Pull the thread and keep pulling the thread. That's how real progress is made. Also: important points on software versus products, and what that means for monetizing #OpenSource. I agree with his approach of using #trademark to protect the biz while releasing all code under a liberal license (that's my plan for https://dropserver.org)https://changelog.social/@changelog/110588215181367630

A lot of interesting replies in this plea by @stefano to not depend on #Docker to distribute usable #FOSS software.https://mastodon.bsd.cafe/@stefano/111220989211321440No easy solution as everything circles back to dynamic linking, package managers, build toolchains, etc etc.. all hard problems for their own reasons. This is relevant to me as I try to figure out the easiest way for people to install #Dropserver.#opensource #selfhosting

Hardware with ready-to-run #FOSS is the key to take #selfhosting outside of its niche.https://social.coop/@scottjenson/111322022014065173Of course the hardware has to be good, the price reasonable, the setup procedure exemplary, and the follow-on #UX very good. There should be no footguns and the entire stack should auto-upgrade itself cleanly and reliably. Not a small hill to climb.@scottjenson

#TLS in a private home network: is there anything being worked on to make this easier? The options seem to be:- get a valid cert using a purchased domain name and use it internally- become your own root CA and install root certs on each deviceBoth have significant downsides. But if you do neither you don't get that sweet sweet HTTPS that is needed for so many web features (webcam access, PWA, etc..)Is any work being done to help improve this situation?#selfhosting #networking

My dad is visiting and only brought his #ipad. He's trying to do a bit of content authoring and editing. It's not working. Between the #ios text input, goofy selection business, dumbed down apps, small screen and the huge keyboard that covers it, it just isn't happening. It used to be the ipad was the future of work? Back to reality! Work requires a proper screen, a full keyboard, and a pointing device.

@twizzay here's a story that will put weight and balance in perspective: a long time ago I flew on a DC 3 with about 12 other people. The pilot was someone we all knew, so when we got to cruise altitude we all got up and moved to the back of the cabin. Through the open cockpit door we saw him spinning the trim wheel. Then we crept to the front, and giggled as he trimmed again. The third time he finally turns around and flips us off and we all burst out laughing. That's how dramatic that got.

@twizzay of course we wouldn't do that any time other than cruise. Doing this during takeoff or landing would be a terrible idea. And the DC 3 is a relatively big aircraft and there were only a dozen or so of us.Weight and balance is critically important not to screw up, but when you're talking about transport aircraft and a few people moving around it's nothing to get panicky about.I bet the captain and FO had a good laugh when the attendant asked them. Probably why she dropped it.

@fabrice @10leej @ironicbadger That's helpful, thank you. So that's GrayJay, and they explain the reason for that license (though I agree with the post that Trademark would be a better tool here.)All the other FUTO projects I looked at are properly Open Source. Immich will stay Open Source (according to their blog post).

So pocket is shutting down. It's fatiguing to have your digital life depend on so many externalities that you don't control. If I have food in my fridge, I can eat. If I have clothes in my closet I can get dressed and go outside. It won't all disappear at a moment's notice because some decision was made somewhere. In the digital world, permanence is a mirage. You can't really depend on anything being there, unless you control it all from the hardware to the software.

Dang, another one today:https://me.dm/@anildash/114552880104048455@anildash Glitch is where many people hosted their little personal apps. I wish I had Dropserver further along so this could stop happening.

@tomjennings Anaheim - Santa Barbara is 4 hours. We can drive it in under 2. If there is lots of traffic it’s maybe 2:30. In exceptionally bad traffic (full holiday rush hour ) it can be 3. It’s never 4.
