I wonder what'd happen if you replaced the oscillator of a 486 with a programmable one. Like, turbo already existed, but could you just smoothly ramp a 486 from 50mhz down to half a kHz?It'd be neat to see what breaks and when

@foone it wasn't a 486, but I remember a forum post from way back in prehistory, when someone would downclock an IBM PC down and down until it stopped working. It did reach a few 100 kHz iirc

@foone need 250Hz? Just PWM the oscillator between 0Hz and 500Hz.The duty cylcle controlled by another oscillator, of course

@foone also, having done literally this with an FPGA, you need really smooth frequency transitions to not screw everything up (probably the PLLs getting confused? Idrk)I had to rent a big expense analog signal generator and even then it would lock up if I spun the knob too fast
