NYC is swarming with Mormons. What is up with that? When they ask me "would you like to go to Church?" I have taken to trying to convince them to come to MY church, which I don't go to very often, but it has good music and is pro gay people so. You get Jesus and the rainbow. JOIN ME BROTHER.They back off so fast. It is very funny.

@risottobias They are always wandering around in the South Bronx like white tourists used to when this place was burned out. But, I haven't seen those kinds of tourists for 20 years and the Mormons keep coming.

@futurebird A few years back I was on their rotation list, until I engaged them with questions about atheism. I never heard from them again after that.

@bruce They can't really door-knock in the Bronx as the doormen and supers would never let them in the halls. So they wander around and try to talk to you coming out of the subway. But this happened 4 times this week and that's more than ever before.Worse they don't speak Spanish and are in the SB which is so low effort. But maybe it's for the best. Just means they come at me more since I'm not audacious enough to pretend I can't understand them. (which lots of people do)

@futurebird You could start wearing big demon horns. I bet they would cross the street to avoid you. 😜

@bruceiv I mean this is kind of obviously true. Just stopping people on the streets is a boneheaded way to get people to come to your church. I would sincerely love it if they went to some NYC churches as I think it might make their heads spin a little. They could go to Abyssinian in Harlem or All Souls on the Upper East, or even right to Trinity. They are acting like they are visiting the got damn moon.

@futurebird @bruceiv i want to teach them about the Asch conformity experiments, and once they've got that, i want to point out what those findings suggest about their core beliefs

@futurebird I had a Mormon friend when I was younger who had to go out on mission for the church. He said many Mormons choose big cities for their mission, ostensibly because they are hotbeds of people needing saving but really because if you have the opportunity to get away from a stifling life for a bit, why wouldn’t you choose a place like NYC? If you notice there is usually a younger and an older missionary together, just like the old Soviet border guards.

@futurebird Just tell them the Book of Mormon is likely a ripoff of another contemporary book: http://wordtree.org/thelatewar/#tldr

@futurebird We get them in Boston, too. I walk past them without acknowledging their very existence because I am fundamentally a kind and polite person and the alternate response would not be.

@futurebird It was very rare to get Mormon missionaries in New Brunswick. I was just heading from the bus stop to my house when two approached me. I said: "Thanks fellas. I'm an atheist so not interested, but I do like your TV commercials."The look I got was akin to an alien first encountering life on Earth. They gawked for a bit, turned heel and fled. That was about 25 years ago. Never encountered any since.

@futurebird it’s required of the young people to serve 2 years as a missionary. Who wouldn’t choose NYC? My dad used to entertain the Jehovah’s Witness missionaries when he got older. He had no intention of converting but he liked the company.

@futurebird @bruceiv I would love to see a Mormon try to proselytize a Scientologist (or the other way round) on a Manhattan sidewalk. Scientologists used to be out in force. Anyway, the two of them going at it, each trying to convert the other, would be some of the best public entertainment I've seen in a while.

@futurebird do they stand out as much in your area as they do here in Austria?Do you get non-American Mormons? Here it’s always Americans, I guess it’s a way for them to see rest of the world?I usually talk to them when they approach me because they always look like lost puppies and they’re always polite but for some reason they seem confused with my atheist answers.Don’t they get any training before they‘re sent out? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
