@ExponentialGPs The spider's "feelers" are so big because it's holding it's front legs waving them around pretending to be an ant. Which my carpenter ant colony says is very culturally insensitive. The ant mimic spiders say getting eaten by carpenter ants is "culturally insensitive" and keep pretending to be ants. (Ants will eat just about any insect they can figure out how to take down. A little spider isn't safe. )

@futurebird There are so many ants in my yard, incl carpenter ants, I’m on the edge of a wooded hillside, so I hope her disguise is really convincing at the ant level. Obvs fooled me…

@futurebird @ExponentialGPs so it's a defense mechanism? I speculated that it was for sneaking into ant bases and stealing their loot

@futurebird I'm now left wondering, how does the spider know - seems to mean a lot of self-awareness, and they don't have mirrors to try out the disguise. I may never get this mystery out of my mind.
