I've thought for a long time that #OwnCast servers were somehow part of the fediverse, like PeerTube servers are. But in this interview with founder and lead developer Gabe Kangas, he seems to be saying that it isn't;https://www.lorenzosmusic.com/2025/05/gabe-kangas-owncast.htmlCan anyone clarify?#streaming

@strypey Owncast announces to the fediverse when you go live, and it shows in the chat when people boost or like the going live message

@strypey Owncast servers are certainly, optionally, a part of the Fediverse.

Thanks for answering the yes/no question here @owncast. Bit of a shame the details given here about how fediverse integration with OwnCast works;https://mstdn.io/@draqlo/114606613006481463... never made it into the interview. I worry that a lot of people will be left with the same false or confused impression I was.

Thanks for going into detail @draqlo, that's exactly what I wanted to clarify : )

@strypey not a problem, and of course I should have specified that connecting to the fediverse is optional

Just out of curiosity, when you say;@owncast> optionally, a part of the FediverseDo you mean opt-out, like most fediverse platforms, or opt-in like Mobilizon?@draqlo

@strypey Opt-in. An Owncast server is always private by default and you have to enable features to change that.

@strypey @owncast yeah, my wording could use some work. You have to turn it on in the admin panel before it does any of that

@owncast> you have to enable features to change thatHow is that made clear to admins when they establish a new OwnCast server, and to streamers when they create an account on one? It would be a crying shame if people thought their streams were discoverable via the fediverse when they're not.

@strypey I'm guessing you don't use Owncast or haven't had an opportunity to check it out as you can't create an account on an Owncast server. If after you try it out you have specific concerns do please bring them up. No offense, but right now it seems like you're criticizing something you've never experienced.

@owncast > you can't create an account on an Owncast serverAh, OK. Good to know.> it seems like you're criticizing something you've never experiencedSorry my questions have been annoying. You're right I haven't tried OwnCast yet. Not criticising at all, just trying to get my head around the basics of how it works, before deciding how to prioritise testing it.Hopefully it's clear to people setting up a new server that fediverse integration needs to be turned on. I guess I'll find out : )
