I know nobody gives a shit, but there are a ton of artists from the 50s and 60s who sold their songs for like $100 each, not knowing how valuable they’d be in the future, never regained the master recordings, or any substantial royalties. But yeah, free Taylor I guess 🙄

@patrickworld You're not wrong, but just because others were more exploited than Taylor Swift, it doesn't mean she wasn't also being exploited. I'm all for freeing Taylor (and Ke$ha, and Britney) *along with* Chuck and Little Richard and all the rest.We tend to discount the problems of successful artists because they're rich and famous (by our standards) even though the vast majority of the fruits of their labours have still been sucked away by middlemen.

@suetanvil No I’m not saying she wasn’t exploited or didn’t deserve to get them back, I’m just saying she didn’t suffer in the interim. The people I’m talking about didn’t re-record their catalogues and go on tours that made them untold millions.

@patrickworld Absolutely true. And they were often too poor to be able to say no. It came down to either sell this song for a pittance or get evicted. Also, racism.(I strongly suspect that one of the big reasons Dolly Parton had such a long career was because her husband owned a paving company, so she could turn down bad deals and still pay the bills.)

@suetanvil @patrickworld There’s 2 major incomes for artists - publishing (where I don’t own my work) and ‘needle drop’ (yes really the term) where my home studio produced ‘master records’ which I *do* own. The opposite of T Swift who is comparatively lucky she can make her ‘versions’. Every version of mine is part owned by BMG worldwide.Mind you I did negotiate a big fat advance that the publishers likely regret. 😀 #musicproduction #music

@patrickworld (Taylor Swift has the advantage of having *extremely* business-literate parents and she *still* lost here back catalogue to some asshole with too much money.)

@suetanvil @patrickworld I should also add a fun fact that these days nobody wants to buy the song (requires work) but everybody wants to buy the audio sample (easy peasy). So owning the ‘needle drop’ is often the winning move for small music makers.Anecdote - BMG UK thought they were onto a global winner when Chanel wanted some of mine. But they wanted the recording and I had them by the genitals. Things went messy… #music
