Got an amazing photo while feeding them this morning. I have this old Ant Watchers Manual as I love old ant keeping books. One of the girls helped by posing with it.

@futurebird I remember putting dabs of paint on a select number of harvester ants in the wild during a field ecology class 45 years ago, returning a day later to count the number of painted ants, and using mathematical formulae to estimate colony size. I also remember studying a colony of leaf cutter ants and unsuccessfully digging for their fungus garden. But I learned more about ant behavior and possible correlates with how the human brain and consciousness work by reading “Ant Fugue” by Douglas Hofstadter a few days ago. If I were teaching a college class about ant behavior, I might make it a reading assignment.
