What do you call it when you were raised to be "handy" and so you are confused about how to "call a plumber" since you always did that yourself but now you are old and grumpy and do not want to do a bathroom crafts project after work? It's like being sabotaged by minimal competence. Only now is our place getting old enough that some repairs are too advanced for me...

@futurebird Maybe subtly work things around such that the SO has to do the actual calling?

@futurebird I called a plumber once and regretted it immediately after hearing the estimate. Never again. Learned my lesson.

@futurebird I completely replumbed a ranch layout house (so, very simple) by myself once. BUT, it took me a year. For the things I did bring in plumbers to do (pressure regular, some of the hot water heater stuff), they complimented me on my work. But yeah, call a couple of places. Get quotes.Try not to get a guy you nickname "Tweedledumbass". Standard stuff.

I got mad and fixed it. Sometimes being angry works when doing plumbing.

Superhero who can fix any problem. But only when really in a b*tchy mood and they like to think of themselves as a calm and reasonable person so it's a slow boil till anything gets done.

@futurebird Don't call any services on Angi aka Angi's List. You will be phone spammed. They also hide their affiliation. The one I called had a website titled "salemlocalplumbers.com" or something, and it took me months to get rid of them.

@futurebird I've never had any compunction against calling a plumber or electrician when there's water in the outlet or vice versa. My equivalent frustration is related to bicycles. I'm supposed to be able to do anything on my bikes, right? But I'm getting better.

@futurebird I can work on cars, but i don't enjoy it, and I'd much rather pay someone else to do it. Plumbing is no different.

@futurebird Well, it has been called "The Curse of Knowing How", and I feel it a LOT!This was written about programming, but it applies to other trades, too. (I didn't write this, but I can relate). There are so many things that I know that I *can* do, and I feel this growing-up-poor obligation to DIY, but it's just not efficient, and there's only so much time in a day.https://web.archive.org/web/20250506084841/https://notashelf.dev/posts/curse-of-knowing
