as I said, people who want to use AI will talk themselves into it no matter what counterarguments are provided

@deprecated_ii all I seen from AI is useless code and slow autocomplete when I just want some old fashion intellisense. It wastes time inputting code no one asked for and is annoying as hell.Plus I don't know how to disable it and I am not paid enough to care too much about a VDI's performance running background useless background processes.

It's a slippery slope that few will be able to resist. I resisted learning multiplication in the 4th grade, because I had heard of computers. They were huge things back then, with limited access but they could multiply quickly. I did eventually learn, but not until late in 4th grade.. they had to threaten and cajole. I hate to contemplate what a 4th grader thinks today.

@basadeskaiser @deprecated_ii I have found AI to be incredibly useful for exactly that reason. When I try to program something, the first half is producing broken useless code and the second half is debugging it into something that does what I want. With AI, I can skip the first step.

@yafa @deprecated_ii I want to be competent in as many fields as posssible, too bad I am not like one of those hackermen that bash the keyboard and get you a X application that run your taxes and does your laundry.

@yafa @basadeskaiser if you don't practice writing code you're never going to stop making those mistakesdo you plan to be dependent on AI permanently, like so many people are dependent on their IDEs? unable to write correct code without a tool to help you?

@deprecated_ii @yafa @basadeskaiser there is no replacement for beating your head against a problemit's more than just writing code; it's also about understanding the systems and sub-systems you're interacting withcan it be done faster? yesthe question is, will you be a better programmer after taking the faster route? the answer is no

@deprecated_ii @basadeskaiser I am very bad at programming and practice doesn't seem to help. Of course I'm going to rely on tools that elevate me from "bad and slow" to "bad and not quite as slow."

@JoshuaSlocum @deprecated_ii @basadeskaiser Taking the slower route doesn't make me a better programmer, it just makes me a bad programmer who is also slow. I am not and never will be a good programmer.

@yafa @deprecated_ii @basadeskaiser i get what you're saying, but...programming has many layers, and by its nature--write once, use many times--it scales rapidlyso a really good programmer can outperform 5 or 10 middling programmers, which is great, but there aren't that many really good programmers, and they all have some sort of personality issueso the industry attempts to make middling programmers better, through languages, libraries, tools, etc.that's fine, and i don't have a problem with it as a general ruleAI-assisted programming can be like that as wellif--and this is a big if--you already are a good, or at least very competent programmergetting into AI-assisted programming is very much like a writer who uses alcohol to be productively creativeit can be an extremely powerful tool, for sure, but the dependence becomes a problem quicklyunfortunately the industry will reward the programmers hooked on cheap scotch because it has an insatiable appetite for cheap and replaceable middling programmers to produce shitcodethe AI-assist will improve, a lot, over time, i don't doubt itthe damage it will do to the industry, however, is unknown and unknowable, but i think it will be severe

@JoshuaSlocum @deprecated_ii @basadeskaiser If being a good programmer matters at all, then why does everyone keep hiring Indians?
