Oof, am I happy that I went to school in a time when #AI was unusable for that, at least a lot more then it is nowMust be so very frustrating seeing everyone fly by with AI when you're trying to actually learn somethingThere really is a generation coming that only cares about some (crappy)results while they never get to enjoy the process of learning other then typing words in a prompt to a script

@stux I've caught AI being "confidently wrong" about passages of lesser-known books that I know very well. It's quick to correct itself, but students won't know this.

@stux Imagine the heartbreak of teaching an art class and hearing from students about the ease with which they produced their images "just by using prompts."Some of them were kidding. Some of them were not.

@stux just imagine going to school to do it. Sitting there in biology classes, looking at neurons under a microscope, these cool little biological and/or gates, thinking how to make neural networks in software that do GRAND things! Like....make Trump Pope pictures. Such a waste. Such a very very sad waste. I think most people who have been doing AI seriously over the last 25 years or so are telling people we make some boring ass piece of business Software, like SAP instead of revealing the truth

@stuxMy worry is that it is mixed with crap voice recognition. There is no writing or reading. We end up with illiterate prompt makers

@stux We had a whole side conversation at work about how easy it is to make AI screw up.I was just able to do it by asking "Talking Heads and Dragonforce have songs that share the same title. What is that title?" It said there was no such song. The answer is "Once In A Lifetime" because both bands have a song with that title

@stux When I went to high school, calculator use was still controversial and banned by some teachers. I can’t imagine being a teacher in this landscape of social media, culture wars and AI. Sad to say it but I’m glad I’m old.

@stux i was in school when it was still libraries, card catalogs, and physical books. there was some online info but mostly it was how to get the book that had what you wanted.whenever i got into some new hobby, it was off to the library to get books, magazines, etc. and learn everything i could. i loved doing that research.while i don't see those days coming back (nor should they), there are parts of that experience that i do think are valuable, just like handwriting notes is a more effective learning tool for most, rather than typing into a computer.be nice when there isn't all the hype about LLMs and we can try to pick the most effective teaching/learning tools, not the shiny new toy.

@stux there are opportunities, challenges and dangers to it. One danger being the old school and education system is not incompatible with AI in a positively developing way. Thus the education system has to change quickly in order to adapt end help humans to continue growing. If it does not, ppl in a wide range will be victims of manupilation and control by those influencing AI.

@stux I’m glad for them. I fucking hated school with a passion. Sitting there bored out of my skull rote-learning dry facts that I would never need to know. Exams designed to test recitation of facts and not reasoning or problem-solving abilities. Obedience training and never questioning authority. Our education system is designed to produce compliant factory workers. I hope LLMs kill it.We need an education system designed to actually educate and develop kids. Montessori++.
