Suppose I wanted a solvent that made MEK, acetone, and toluene look like water by comparison. What would be some good choices?

@N1ZZZ I somehow forgot about benzene, thanks.

@kilroy_was_here This is in no way a recommendation. I'd avoid benzene like the plague unless I was in a class B Hazmat suit.

@N1ZZZ @kilroy_was_here What about trichloroethylene? Or Perc What’s the intended purpose (if you can say).

@HopelessDemigod @N1ZZZ @kilroy_was_here It depends on what you're planning to dissolve. Turpentine or citrus terpenes (Citra Solv) for wax and removing some types of old paint, both are fairly safe. NMP (n-methyl-3-pyrrolidone) can dissolve lots of things other solvents can't, including PVDF (Kynar) resin. It was used in some "safe" paint strippers, but was banned for consumers cuz it's toxic to the unborn. Its odor is stomach-churning to me. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone

@HopelessDemigod @N1ZZZ @kilroy_was_here THF (tetrahydrofuran) is the solvent used in PVC cement. It evaporates really fast.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetrahydrofuran

@kilroy_was_here Just be sure to read any SDSs for these solvents - if you can buy them at retail.

@kilroy_was_here Also be sure to spend some time googling the correct types of gloves for handling that stuff. Ansell is a good manufacturer. Their butyl rubber / Viton gloves are pretty bombproof, but you may not like the cost - $120 and up. OTOH, if you don't cut them, they should last for years. Cheaper ones may work if you don't exceed time ratings. The time-consuming search is left to the student.
