@yurnidiot The fifth graders when I forget to type slowly enough for them to keep up when we're writing programs. (I've gotten better at this, but I'm astonished at how slowly some of them type... they do improve though. )

@futurebird @yurnidiot Obvious would be to teach them touch typing and how to change keyboard layouts in case some of them really struggle. Dvorak layout solved any touch typing problems for me, learned on gtypist for an hour a day for a week and got to over 100 wpm. There's quite a lot of touch typing exercise games around too. Typing of the Dead comes to mind.

@cohentheblue @yurnidiot Telling me to teach the fifth graders Dvork is the MOST FEDI suggestion EVER. OMG.No, I just type more slowly, and they do typing games in homeroom and they are able to touch type by grade seven. It's not really a problem They are in fifth grade. LMAO.

@cohentheblue @yurnidiot Honestly them complaining that I'm typing too fast our running joke. To their credit they've gotten better over the course of the year. They don't ask me where the square brackets are anymore and they remember how to cut and paste with key commands.

@futurebird @cohentheblue @yurnidiot I learned fast touch typing, both QWERTY and Neo2, with a specific game that I'm not sure if it would be suitable for fifth graders... ehm, *cough*, #TheTypingOfTheDead. :DOriginally an arcade shooter, was adopted by Sega for keyboard inputs. You'd have to type the words over the zombies while they got closer and wanted to bite you. Endbosses had ridiculously long sentences with very unusual words :D.The adrenaline really made you type fast, hehe.

@futurebird @yurnidiot Had someone simply shown me in school that there are different keyboard layouts, I would have taken it from there. As it was, I discovered it only in my twenties through working with Linux, having wasted tons of time typing slowly and painfully on qwerty. Dvorak makes sense for me, hands alternate between vowel side and consonant side. It's much faster and I've never gotten tired typing on dvorak layout.

@futurebird I taught myself Dvorak on a lark in college. Honestly it’s been more a curse than anything, since it’s never the default and I’m slower when helping my parents (or my son) on their own computer.Only good side is my kids can’t generally bop onto my computer and play pranks that involve typing.

@futurebird @cohentheblue @yurnidiot When I was in a hotel school, I had problems following the IT course. I just couldn't find all the buttons in Word and Excel quickly enough. And I did some Atmel assembler projects at that time.Individual people have individual problems. Thanks for taking your time for the pupils.

@EricLawton @futurebird @cohentheblue @yurnidiot That's for the old computer with the legacy 21st century software nobody has documentation for, written in a computer language the ship's AI wasn't trained on, but is for some reason running life support.

@futurebird @cohentheblue @yurnidiot those fifth graders need to build their own keyboards with custom layouts. kids come out of the box knowing how to design in CAD and do light soldering work, right?

@petealexharris @MegaMichelle @EricLawton @cohentheblue @yurnidiot What did Java do to deserve this hate? I don't like it as much as python but... it's fine! You can do all the things with Java.

@futurebird @MegaMichelle @EricLawton @cohentheblue @yurnidiot It's mostly an aesthetic objection for me. It's an unremarkable curly-braces language with ugly naming conventions and syntax. It's fine, yes. The gap between easy dynamic coding in Python and high-performance high-safety coding in Rust isn't wide enough (for me) to jam something as clunky as Java into.

@petealexharris @EricLawton @futurebird @cohentheblue @yurnidiot Have you read A Deepness in the Sky by Vernor Vinge? The spaceship in that book is called the Qeng Ho, one of the main characters is a "software archaeologist" and he describes the system clock as:a little program that ran a counter. Second by second, the Qeng Ho counted from the instant that a human had first set foot on Old Earth’s moon.

@apophis @yurnidiot @cohentheblue If I get my hands on a physical Dvorak keyboard I'll do a show and tell since I think it's good for them to know that all of these things are choices made by people... in theory "for reasons" ... but that last bit is just a theory.

@futurebird @MegaMichelle @EricLawton @cohentheblue @yurnidiot Oh yeah, especially where it's a language that makes you think differently. The most fun I had using an unfamiliar language for a real project was with Erlang (later re-written in Python because work wanted to keep the number of supported technologies down to a minimum.)

@futurebird @apophis @yurnidiot Never had a physical dvorak layout keyboard. For the time that I was still learning (special characters took a little longer to get used to than letters) I pried the keycaps off my usual high profile non-mechanical keyboard (low profile ones have very delicate keycap mechanisms, can't be pried off) and put them on in dvorak layout. Used a flat head screwdriver to lift the caps gently straight up.
