@Anke He did kind of kick all of it off by writing them a letter saying that they needed to quit wasting time and just pick a Pope or else "divine vengeance would fall upon them" ... but, he must have been so dismayed when they all showed up at his nice cave. Imagine spending your life finding a way to live a simple isolated life and these clowns come in and say "how would you like to do the exact opposite of this?
