I will give the Catholic Church credit for being one of the few ancient stultified enduring institutions of human power that doesn't slack on the outfits. It disgusts me that US supreme court justices are too hip and modern to put on more elaborate robe or nice little wigs even as they revive the horrors of the past. Likewise parliaments are always trying to act like "we live in modern times" so they don't need to put on a costume. I want amusing and impressive costumes. I want hats.

There should be an interesting hat and robe for EVERY major office. Something ridiculous and imposing. If you want to "rule" you need to dress up. It's insulting to have them show up in ordinary clothing like they are doing something ordinary that no one should pay any attention to. I want a president's hat, congressional capes and little slippers. Make it silly. Make it theatrical. Make it tedious.

@futurebird I always enjoyed graduation day as an academic, because we all got to dress up in fancy robes and hoods and hats.Lots of comparison in the robing room: "That's a nice turquoise lining you've got." "Yes, but I have to wear the mortar board, not the Tudor cap."

@futurebird Its a variation of the emperor's new clothes. We all must be solemn and respectful to the funny clothes wearers rather than expressing how ridiculous they look.

@futurebird I think we all agree that the current hat for "president" is a conical Dunce cap.

@futurebird I glanced at the shrunken thumbnail for one news image (one of them with the orange and white gowns) and thought it was a picture of road cones. Read the headline and did a double-take wondering what traffic cones had to do with pope selection. Only then noticing the traffic cones had heads and hands.

@futurebird justices of the Supreme Court of Canada wear red robes trimmed with white fur. Santa suits. I don't know the detailed history. It's possible they had to hear cases in an unheated Ottawa shack for a few decades before the court building was completed.

@futurebirdYou should come and live in the UK, the house of Lords rarely disappoints and quite a lot of the other institutions have silly costumes from the 17th century as well 😋

@futurebird baby steps: we could bring back mayoral collars (like they still have in the UK, canada, NZ, etc):https://www.google.com/search?q=Mayoral+collar+uk&udm=2though, you just know that somewhere in the UK, there's gotta be some young mayor trying to be "cool" by showing up in a hoodie, jeans, sneakers, and their mayoral collar.

@futurebird Supreme Court Justices need NASCAR style logos on their robes so we know who is paying them to screw the public. Can we also get a menu so we know how much a favorable ruling is? I'd like to know how much my freedom and well-being are worth.#nojustice

@futurebird MPs and their equivalents should be required to wear silly hats whenever they go out in public, even if it's just to the grocery store. It's important that the outfits be silly so nobody forgets that they work for the people, not the other way around, a common misconception among career politicians.

@futurebird At the late Sir Terry Pratchett said in Witches Abroad:"It wasn’t the wearing of the hats that counted so much as having one to wear. Every trade, every craft had its hat. That’s why kings had hats. Take the crown off a king and all you had was someone good at having a weak chin and waving to people. Hats had power. Hats were important."

@futurebird The Doge of Venice had a good hat, and a rule that they could not accept any gifts of lasting value the whole time they were the ruler. Punishment was death and dishonour of the entire family. Something the US might want to adopt for their supreme ruler.
